"From USA Today and internationally bestselling author Leonard Goldberg comes a new thrilling tale of Sherlock Holmes' daughter and her companion Dr. John Watson, Jr. as they investigate a murder at the highest levels of British society. 1910. Joanna Blalock's keen mind and incredible insight lead her to become a highly-skilled nurse, one of the few professions that allow her to use her finely-tuned brain. But when she and her ten-year-old son witness a man fall to his death, apparently by suicide, they are visited by the elderly Dr. John Watson and his charming, handsome son, Dr. John Watson Jr. Impressed by her forensic and deductive skills, they invite her to become the third member of their deductive team. Caught up in a Holmesian mystery that spans from hidden treasure to the Second Afghan War of 1878-1880, Joanna and her companions must devise an ingenious plan to catch a murderer in the act while dodging familiar culprits, Scotland Yard, and members of the British aristocracy. Unbeknownst to her, Joanna harbors a mystery of her own. The product of a one-time assignation between the now dead Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler, the only woman to ever outwit the famous detective, Joanna has unwittingly inherited her parents' deductive genius. The Daughter of Sherlock Holmes is full of excitement and intrigue, sure to be enjoyed by fans of Sherlock Holmes as well as the works of Laurie R. King and Charles Finch"--… (més)

It was pure willpower (and guilt since I got the library to buy the book) that got me through this book. I love reading (well-written) Sherlock Holmes pastiches like those by Laurie R. King and Sherry Thomas, but that's not the case with this book. The only thing that was good about this book is that it was so easy to read because you could skim the pages. The book lacks well-developed characters and an interesting story. Most of the characters in this book is a new generation of the classical books, so it's Dr. John Watson Jr, Miss Hudson, hell even Toby the dog's offspring is named Toby (or Toby two or something I don't have the book here so hard to check), as well. Even the villain is Moran is related to one of the villains in the original stories. As for Joanna Blalock (yeah imaginative to give her a LOCK name), what can I saw, all through the book she shows how clever she is (not hard when everyone else around her are slow) and then there is the instant attraction between her and John Watson Jr (who btw is so bland that I want to scream) is making me gag.

Just not, I managed to finish this book, but will not read any more books in this series! ( )

"The Daughter of Sherlock Holmes" started well but that didn't last long. I was annoyed that EVERY character was a son or daughter of the original characters created by Doyle, even the maid, and I felt that the author treated his readers as simpletons. Too often things were explained in unnecessary detail. I also found the dialogue stilted and the 'romance' between Joanna and John was cringeworthy, to say the least. Then there was the self-praise. Joanna and co. were always congratulations each other after every discovery, regardless of how insignificant it was and this quickly grew irksome.

I see that there are a number of other books in this series but I won't be reading them. The only positive comment I can make about "The Daughter of Sherlock Holmes" is the front cover - it is very eye-catching! ( )

I read this to get an introduction to the series after winning book #5, The Abduction of Pretty Penny, in a goodreads giveaway. What I got was that plus a light, cozy-ish mystery that pulled in elements from the original Sherlock Holmes cases and added a new twist to the Holmes-Watson partnership. Although this went a step further than just introducing a female detective into a Holmes styled mystery I don’t think Laurie R. King (Mary Russell & Sherlock Holmes) has anything to worry about. I hope now that the groundwork’s laid the rest of the series will continue to develop the characters and put a little more focus on the mysteries themselves. ( )

The Daughter of Sherlock Holmes (2017) by Leonard Goldberg. I tried not to like this novel. I despaired when Dr. Watson introduced us to his son, Dr. John Watson. Fine I thought, father and son off on an adventure, but of course, because of the title, there had to be Holme’s daughter involved.
Still fine with me. The son and the daughter set up in business as crime fighters mirroring their famous fathers. And then a crime was introduced, a “suicide” that had have been murder and easily seen by any investigator worth his or her salt as such.
Enter Lestrade, Inspector from Scotland Yard, and you guessed it, son of the other Lestrade of earlier tales. And the “suicide” happened in the home of Dr. Moran, Christopher the son not the father, Sebastian.
I thought that this was just being lazy on the part of the author. Each child is an echo of their parent, set in the ways of the past and so not original at all. Still there was the plot to think of, but don’t think too much about it as the thing is used only to set the stage for possible other tales. The why of the murder plot seems rehashed from another of the A.C. Doyle novels, but I could be wrong.
By the time the daughter of a famous hound was introduced I was in total despair. Time and again I set the book aside and read something I felt was better. In the end I did manage to force myself through and finish the thing.
It was O.K. Not great or terrible but laying somewhere in the great morass of being a nice little plop about London looking for proof of a murder and a hastily cribbed “Non-copy” of a Holmes tale.
I’d say you could easily find a more productive Holmes read by contacting Breese Books of London and seeing what they might have to offer. I’ve picked up more than one “other” Holmes tales there. ( )
