Sam Hunter is a PI in the big bad city. When he takes a new case it's like he's accepting the client into his 'pack'. And Sam will do anything to protect the members of his pack. Dogs are like that. So are wolves. And so, too, are werewolves. Like Sam. Sam is a "benandanti", an ancient race of werewolves who fight evil. And evil comes in all shapes and sizes; it comes at people from all directions. The cases Sam takes range from saving the world from genetically-engineered super soldiers to saving a young boy from the very real monster in his closet.… (més)

Beneath the Skin: The Sam Hunter Case Files
By Jonathan Maberry
Boy was this book a treat! I was going through a spell of finding horrible books then found this gem! Hallelujah! Like a breath of fresh air! Just what the fantasy lover in me needed!
This has several stories of Sam Hunter, a PI of a different sort. A werewolf PI comes in handy when things get out of control even when he has to deal with vampires!
I loved each story, great characters, world building, lots of action and great plot all in each short story!!! I hope the author writes more about Sam! I am hooked!
Great narration! ( )

Overall, I enjoyed the hell out of this collection of Sam Hunter stories, but there were a few minor, niggling details that kept that elusive fifth star's appearance.

Maberry utilizes a similar sarcastic cocky/empathetic style of narration to these stories as he does to the excellent Joe Ledger series. That similarity was likely enhanced through the narration of Ray Porter who, no question, does his typical excellent job. But it just sounds so close to Joe Ledger at times, it was a little distracting.

I do like how he pulls the town (and the odd character or two) of Pine Deep from his three novels starting with Ghost Road Blues in (and if you haven't read that series, then correct that. Do it now), though, much like that series, he uses that same shorthand description of name-dropping to describe someone. Steve Buscemi. Stephen King. And so on. Maberry's an excellent writer, for the most part, but I really do hate this limitation he imposes on himself.

And there's also some stock phrases, he seems to use again and again. "So, that happened." is a big one. And each time the werewolf point comes up in conversation, he seems to fall back on a variation of, "...and there it is."

But what of the stories themselves? Uniformly cool situations. Unfortunately, however, uniform plotting. He meets his next client. They relate their problem. Something tickles Sam's empathy bone, usually a child or violence against a woman, and we get a bit of backstory on Sam then. With the exception of the first story, the werewolf thing conversation comes next. Then he investigates, comes across the big bad quickly and, again with the exception of one of the stories, he wolfs out and kicks its ass.

Yet, for all of that, I think Maberry's incapable of writing a bad story, and I enjoyed the hell out of every damn one of these stories, even when all the points above are factored in.

...and I'd be the first to line up for a big, fat, meaty Sam Hunter novel. Come on, man. Get on that. ( )

I liked this one. But I don't know it was something about the repeating of why he was so protective over his clients that bugged me a bit. The stories were good. Made me want to read the Pine Deep series. Overall I liked it. ( )

Sam Hunter used to be a police detective, but he got kicked off the force for excessive force. Bad things tended to happen to child molesters and others who preyed on the truly innocent. Their injuries were strange, too--as if they'd gotten mauled by a dog.

Now Sam is a private detective in Philadelphia, and he attracts an interesting clientele with interesting problems. Problems they can't even explain to the police.

Problems better addressed by a werewolf.

Sam is a monster who protects people from other monsters.

This is a collection of five short stories, in which we get to know Sam, his rough around the edges facade, and his strong, humane values. In the process, Sam is also learning more about the weirdness of the world and the monstrous things lurking in it that even a werewolf suspected. The stories cover the sad, the terrifying, and the sweet. There are vampires and Lovecraftian horrors.

Oh, and other werewolves, too.

I would have said that I had no patience for werewolf stories, but I really enjoyed these, and I'd like to read or listen to more of them.

Recommended.

I bought this audiobook.
