Twelve-year-old Crow has lived her entire life on a tiny, isolated piece of the starkly beautiful Elizabeth Islands in Massachusetts. Abandoned and set adrift in a small boat when she was just hours old, Crow's only companions are Osh, the man who rescued and raised her, and Miss Maggie, their fierce and affectionate neighbor across the sandbar. Crow has always been curious about the world around her, but it isn't until the night a mysterious fire appears across the water that the unspoken question of her own history forms in her heart. Soon, an unstoppable chain of events is triggered, leading Crow down a path of discovery and danger.… (més)

I listened to the audiobook version in less than a day (my companion while preparing dishes over the holiday) and the story of protagonist, Crow, was a nice complement to the holiday. Crow lives on a tiny island in the waters off Massachusetts with her father figure, Osh, the man who found her when she washed up on the island as a newborn.
With prompting from Crow and together with their longtime kindly neighbor, Miss Maggie, Crow and Osh have quite the adventure to discover Crow's origins.
YA for peril and some heartbreaking backstory. ( )

Crow's past is a mystery. She washed ashore in a shabby little boat when she was days old and has lived on a tiny island off Massachusetts with Osh, her adopted father and their cat Mouse. She has always hoped to find out her story and there are rumors she came from nearby Penikese, an island that, up until recently, housed a leper colony. ( )

Around 1913, a mysterious old man who lived on a lonely island with few other inhabitants, went to the beach, and found a small boat, carrying a newborn baby. He took the baby back to his hut, named her Crow, and raised her as his own child.
Now 1925, Crow tells her story. Although blissfully happy living with Osh, and the constant friendship of their one close neighbor, Miss Maggie, Crow longs to know where she actually came from, who her real parents were, and why they sent her off in a boat. She will slowly find some of the answers she seeks, though not all of them. And she also will find some things she wasn't seeking at all... both good and bad.
Part mystery, part adventure, and all heart, this is a wonderful book. ( )

Maybe it's because I listened to the audiobook and I tend to notice problems more as I listen. I don't know.
But
Boy, were the characters wading back and forth to the smaller island. Especially during the ending. Also, may I say that the summer seemed to stretch on. Or was it just the warm weather that stretched on?
But to the details I liked.
How willing Crow was to dismiss the city. It was epic.
The levels of maturity Crow shows, some things she can handle, others she can't.
The setting. I do wish it had a bit more sailing though.
