Set in Britain's Dark Ages, this story of Arthur journeys beyond the usual tales of chivalry and romance to introduce Arthur as a man of honor, loyalty, amazing valor, and a man who loves Guinevere more passionately than ever before. It takes a remarkable writer to make an old story as fresh and compelling as the first time we heard it. With The Winter King, the first volume of his magnificent Warlord Chronicles, Bernard Cornwell finally turns to the story he was born to write: the mythic saga of King Arthur. The tale begins in Dark Age Britain, a land where Arthur has been banished and Merlin has disappeared, where a child-king sits unprotected on the throne, where religion vies with magic for the souls of the people. It is to this desperate land that Arthur returns, a man at once utterly human and truly heroic: a man of honor, loyalty, and amazing valor; a man who loves Guinevere more passionately than he should; a man whose life is at once tragic and triumphant. As Arthur fights to keep a flicker of civilization alive in a barbaric world, Bernard Cornwell makes a familiar tale into a legend all over again.… (més)

The Winter King is the best historical fiction I've read in quite some time. I loved it! Cornwell's historical detail and living, breathing characters combine to make you feel as though you're right there, in that ancient time, watching the events. I listened to it on audio, and the narrator is perfect for this series, you feel like you're listening to a first-person witness from those long-ago, terrible days. If I could pick one word for this book it would be "transportive", which is exactly what you want a novel to be. Bravo, Bernard Cornwell! So glad to have "discovered" this author, I now have a lot of reading to do! ( )

Nice first part about Arthur, how Bernard Cornwell mixes history and Fantasy and places Arthur and other characters (who may or may not have existed then or later or at all) in the period after the Romans left Britain (5th-6th century AD). I found it original how the story is "told" from the viewpoint of one of Arthur's warriors, how the man tells it when he's old(er) and no longer a warrior. His goal is to keep the story about Arthur and his dream of a united Britain alive. Of course the Church or Christianity also plays a role in the story, together with Druidism. Battles are a key element in this book, but there's no round table. Nice turnarounds, too, as the story progresses. But somehow I did have some troubles to quickly advance through the story, which perhaps was because I forced myself to carry on. On to Enemy Of God then, but first another, different book, to change my focus a bit. p.s.: at the end, mr. Cornwell explains how he got to write the story, what's real, what's not, which sources he used, etcetera. This is a plus! ( )
