I really liked this and I'm glad it sat so long in my TBR pile because now I can grab book 2 of the series. ( )

Absolutely amazing, fast paced, and with an ending I did not see coming! ( )

So let me start off by saying I didn’t think I would like this book. I’ve been gravitating away from sci-fi recently, with a few exceptions, and while I thought the synopsis sounded interesting, I wasn’t expecting it to be more than a 3-Star rating.

I was so, so, so wrong. Warcross absolutely blew me away. The main characters, Emika and Hideo, are so well-rounded and fascinating. But the supporting characters are equally as interesting, realistic, and flawed. Even Emika’s late father, who we only get to read about in flashbacks, seems like such a fascinating person. You want to get to know all of these characters- even the antagonists.

Most of the twists in this book I didn’t even expect, and the entire book is such a stretch from the usual science fiction genre that the plot never felt forgettable or interchangeable with another book.

This was simply an amazing novel. I absolutely can’t wait to see what happens next. ( )

I don't know if I would rate this book all the way 4 stars, but I did really like it. I thought this was a good intro to the duology and it definitely left me interested in reading the second book.

I really liked our main character, Emika. I thought she was well characterized (though this probably could have been stronger in some parts) and she had an interesting, though not entirely fleshed out, backstory. I was a little surprised at how little we learned about Em's family. We know her dad was a painter, into fashion, and died when she was young but that's really it. I wanted a little bit more of her story and I hope that's somethings that is included in book two.
I liked all of her teammates and other side characters as well. At some parts, I found them to be more interesting than Em. I loved learning more about what their roles were within the game and what there personalities were like. I thought Lu did a really good job giving us enough of the side characters backstories to make them feel fully fleshed out and real.

I thought the world building was pretty good but could have been a lot better. There were some aspects to this that I could picture clearly, but some things left me confused. Lu does a great job of painting a picture of a vaguely futuristic city and world but the parts of the world building centering on the actual game, Warcross confused me a bit. I understand that there's a game that can be played when you have the neurolink glasses on but there were also just things overlayed in the real world that changed if you had the glasses on??? and if you went into the game, you didn't have to play, you could just hang out in the virtual world I think??? It just wasn't always clear to me when exactly events were happening in the real world, just with fancy VR stuff also happening and when characters were actually in the virtual world.

I thought the plot was good but I also predicted every single plot twist in this book. I don't necessarily see that as a bad thing and I also don't think that means that this book will be predictable for everyone. I do think that if you've read these types of stories before or you've read a lot of YA and are maybe a little older, you may find the plot twists to be predictable. Even though I wasn't surprised by what happened in this book, I still had a great time reading it. I didn't love all the scenes of them playing the game, but there's only really two scenes like that. The other action definitely kept me reading and I was invested in the mystery of it all. I think this book is still a good read, even if you find it predictable.

Without giving anything away, I was surprised the book ended the way it did. I got to the end and I didn't realize it was the end. It seemed like there should have been more pages. I would say the ending is a bit of a cliff-hanger but I was more surprised at just the abruptness of the ending. I think that is one part of the book that maybe should have been improved before publication.

I do think I want to read the next book. I liked this one and I am intrigued to see what happens from here. Don't know when I'll get to. I'll have to see when it's available from my library as an eBook but I do want to continue Em's story! ( )

It is solid but predictable. She hit all the right notes, but I felt like I knew what the notes were ahead of time. I appreciated a lot of the details of her world-building, and the action scenes were very good. ( )
