Isobel is a prodigy portrait artist with a dangerous set of clients: the sinister fair folk, immortal creatures who cannot bake bread, weave cloth, or put a pen to paper without crumbling to dust. They crave human Craft with a terrible thirst, and Isobel's paintings are highly prized. But when she receives her first royal patron--Rook, the autumn prince--she makes a terrible mistake. She paints mortal sorrow in his eyes--a weakness that could cost him his life. Furious and devastated, Rook spirits her away to the autumnlands to stand trial for her crime. Waylaid by the Wild Hunt's ghostly hounds, the tainted influence of the Alder King, and hideous monsters risen from barrow mounds, Isobel and Rook depend on one another for survival. Their alliance blossoms into trust, then love--and that love violates the fair folks' ruthless laws. Now both of their lives are forfeit, unless Isobel can use her skill as an artist to fight the fairy courts. Because secretly, her Craft represents a threat the fair folk have never faced in all the millennia of their unchanging lives: for the first time, her portraits have the power to make them feel.… (més)

This book has solidified my love of the ultra-specific and completely rad genre of "human fairy = drama/romance/adventure" that started with the Malediction Trilogy and just exploded from there. I EFFING LOVED THIS BOOK. Fantastic entry into my favorite niche category 11/10 will recommend to literally everyone including my husband ( )

It has been quite a long time since I have been so entranced by a novel. When I wasn’t reading it, all I could think about was the story and the characters.

It is rare to find a YA book with a female protagonist who is so self-assured and uncompromising in her ideals. I felt a strong connection with Isobel; I rooted for her, laughed with her, cried for her, and am proud of her decisions and wit.

This is a book I will whole-heartedly recommend to others, be it my teenage students or my young-at-heart friends. Everyone could easily enjoy this captivating tale. ( )

Overall it was a fun read. There were some true laugh out loud moments in this book which I truly enjoyed. There were a few parts that I felt were unnecessary (personal opinion probably) but it was a fast book and felt complete in the end (somewhat) I felt perhaps the end could have been different.. but only slightly. I felt satisfied but slightly unsatisfied at the same time!

Rook is adorable and Isobel is sweet but critical of everything. It's like a glass half empty situation with that one. I really enjoyed Gadfly from the beginning, Lark was a character all on her own level - the writing was quite fast paced and seamless.

I'm just not invested in this story. I feel like the characters keep flip-flopping. One moment Rook is intimidating next he's innocent as a child then he's murderous then he's wanting Isobel's validation. Isobel will be afraid of him then talk to him like he's a friend. It all just felt too fast.

At first, the cover art and focus on ravens intrigued me. The enchantment business was great as well. Essentially, it's a mixture between deals with the devil and magic wishes with a genie. You must be perfectly clear with what you want. I liked the goat-siblings and the main character who is a painter as well. However, after Isobel finished the painting, the story quickly went in a direction I didn't care for.

I might continue this one day, but, for now, I'm stopping here. Still, I want to read Sorcery of Thorns from this same author.

I don't know if I'm right, but I'm guessing Rook loved a human girl before and she died of old age.
