This is a revised edition of John Milbank's masterpiece, which sketches the outline of a specifically theological social theory. The Times Higher Education Supplement wrote of the first edition that it was "a tour de force of systematic theology. It would be churlish not to acknowledge its provocation and brilliance". This is a very dense, and very hard to read, even if you are schooled in the various fields Milbanks covers. His thesis, that theology has a place at the table, but on its own terms, not just as a bastard step child, is admirable. I would give it five stars, except that it is just inpenetrable in too many places. ( )

I've read enough about this book to pretty much get the "reductio." But every time I've tried to read this, I get utterly lost by about page 200.

A mentor of mine called the incredibly dense way in which this book was written "preemtive argumentation." I think Milbank might have had a bunch of grad students chained to a desk inside a closet somewhere, adding in obscure details to their assigned sections.
