"When the final gavel clapped in a rural southern courtroom in the summer of 1988, Willie J. Grimes, a gentle spirit with no record of violence, was shocked and devastated to be convicted of first-degree rape and sentenced to life imprisonment. Here is the story of this everyman and his extraordinary quarter-century-long journey to freedom, told in breathtaking and sympathetic detail, from the botched evidence and suspect testimony that led to his incarceration to the tireless efforts to prove his innocence and the identity of the true perpetrator. These were spearheaded by his relentless champion, Christine Mumma, a cofounder of North Carolina's Innocence Inquiry Commission. That commission-unprecedented at its inception in 2006-remains a model organization unlike any other in the country, and one now responsible for a growing number of exonerations."--… (més)

Although this book reads like a novel I was amazed at the organizational skills Rachlin obviously has to have been able to put such an incredibly detailed time line together from so many different points of view---an absolutely fascinating story, and horrific all at the same time. Twenty-four years gone--stolen! And that's to say nothing of the efforts of SO many people to try and help along the way---but who kept getting stopped, over and over and over. It's a frightening story in many ways but mostly if you are a person of color in this country—still, day after day, year after year. You're in trouble for just being the skin color you are---a punishment from the outside from the moment you are born. How, how, how do we get rid of this horrible, horrible way people are treated? I was cheered up until the very last couple of sentences in the book---the danger just doesn't stop. Rachlin says that it took him four years to write this book---I'm amazed that it didn't take MUCH longer!!!! It's a wonderful, engrossing book--hard to put down---even though the sum total of it breaks my heart. ( )
