From beloved author Alice Hoffman comes the spellbinding prequel to her bestseller, Practical Magic.Find your magic. For the Owens family, love is a curse that began in 1620, when Maria Owens was charged with witchery for loving the wrong man.Hundreds of years later, in New York City at the cusp of the sixties, when the whole world is about to change, Susanna Owens knows that her three children are dangerously unique. Difficult Franny, with skin as pale as milk and blood red hair, shy and beautiful Jet, who can read other people's thoughts, and charismatic Vincent, who began looking for trouble on the day he could walk. From the start Susanna sets down rules for her children: No walking in the moonlight, no red shoes, no wearing black, no cats, no crows, no candles, no books about magic. And most importantly, never, ever, fall in love. But when her children visit their Aunt Isabelle, in the small Massachusetts town where the Owens family has been blamed for everything that has ever gone wrong, they uncover family secrets and begin to understand the truth of who they are. Back in New York City each begins a risky journey as they try to escape the family curse. The Owens children cannot escape love even if they try, just as they cannot escape the pains of the human heart. The two beautiful sisters will grow up to be the revered, and sometimes feared, aunts in Practical Magic, while Vincent, their beloved brother, will leave an unexpected legacy. Thrilling and exquisite, real and fantastical, The Rules of Magic is a story about the power of love reminding us that the only remedy for being human is to be true to yourself.… (més)

This is only the second book by Alice Hoffman that I’ve read, and I am slightly disappointed that I’ve been missing out all these years on her magical stories! In The Rules of Magic we’re once again set back in time, but close enough to our own that the setting is almost familiar - it should be, since we’re getting New York and Massachusetts in the time just before the events of Practical Magic. Truth be told, I haven’t read the book (waiting on a library loan), but I’ve seen the film a few times, so I was in vaguely familiar territory. We’re set to follow the story of the three New York-based Owens children - Franny, Jet, and Vincent - as they grow up to discover by accident that they have magical powers, and then set off on their journeys to try to break the family curse which stops them from falling in love. Like Practical Magic, the magic seems to take second place to the quest for love, but Hoffman weaves the story so artfully that we’re caught up in her well-developed characters, the casual and ingrained family magic lore, and driving events to carry the book through to its finale without feeling like the story is just a drawn out romance. I guess it technically is one (a romance, that is), but instead of being a love letter between individuals, we’re presented with a love story to life and living, which is infinitely relatable, and infinitely more meaningful in the scope of the world. After this second success, I’m putting the rest of Hoffman’s novels to the top of my reading list and likely instant purchasing a bunch when my thrift shops reopen! ( )

FGMAMTC Blog Review
The Rules of Magic is a family saga about the Owens. Siblings Franny, Jet and Vincent are the main focus, but many well-developed characters fill the story. It follows the siblings from childhood through old age. It also goes back to explain how the love curse started with their ancestors during the Salem witch trials. The reader journeys with Franny, Jet and Vincent as they study their history, learn their abilities and face hardships and tough decisions. The writing is beautiful and easily brought the emotions out. The plot is rich with historical events and in-depth multilayered characters. I feel like I actually know these people and love them. I'm a little sad that my time with them ended.

I really couldn't put this down! I love Alice Hoffman's Magical writing and this was no disappointment! This is the last I've read of the Owen's family group of books. I didn't read in order and it's not necessary, each stands alone well, but I do kind of wish I'd been able to start at the beginning of the story and go from there. ( )

First time I've listened to an audiobook with this narrator. Not enjoying her style. She talks real loud then gets quiet, then talks real loud or over emphasizes a word then gets real quiet. Also, the voice for Isabel and Jet are cringe-worthy at times. (Marin Ireland)
--------------------

Molestation - Adult sexual intercourse with a minor. A woman in her late 30s and the 14 year old Owens boy. I don't care how magically irresistible he is, he was 14. // And she continue to write this 14 year old boy as a man in his 20s. Does she not remember what 14 year old boys are like? Getting drunk regularly in a bar that doesn't check for age is one example. He has his own booth at this bar also.

Until the big 30 year time jump she wrote everyone the same age. Like I couldn't tell the difference between the MCs as teens vs. adults.
--------------------

In the end I found the story pretty boring. There was some nostalgia love for Franny & Jet, mostly after the time jump. I'd never read this again nor recommend. This my 9th Alice Hoffman novel and I definitely need an Alice Hoffman break. ( )

I really enjoyed this book. I had forgotten how wonderful Alice Hoffman's writing is. Through her descriptions, you can picture the characters, setting, everything. This is a prequel to Practical Magic which tells the story of Franny, Jet, and Vincent Owens. ( )
