I will always be thankful to this book because it introduced me to Victoria Schwab, a brilliant author that I've come to admire a lot. The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is a piece of art. The writing is brilliant and it has a magical effect that fits perfectly with the book. The characters are so well fleshed out and written, each of them is perfectly crafted. The narration was exciting, following as if two parallel stories of a same person. The book has strong emotions and they're introduced very well. The author has used the setting, place or time, to her advantage and it makes the story a lot better. The book is subtle, and bold in a lot of ways. The ending did leave me a bit unsatisfied, I don't mind it being a standalone, but even though the ending was stellar in its ways I wanted more. The book became my favorite since the beginning and the vividness of the events and their sequences was really great. ( )

Seven freckles. One for every love she’d have, that’s what Estele had said, when the girl was still young. One for every life she’d lead. One for every god watching over her. Now, they mock her, those seven marks. Promises. Lies. She’s had no loves, she’s lived no lives, she’s met no gods, and now she is out of time.

Addie LaRue is a story about making deals with the devil. A story about living forever. A story about living a life where no one seems to see you for you or to pay you any mind.

It's a fascinating premise, further strengthened by the story's structure. It jumps around somewhat from time to time, place to place, even eventually character to character. It's chaotic and often something I don't care for, but in this, it really works. We know how the story begins, we know how it ends (or at least the beginning of the end), and the rest of the story is filling in the rest, narrowing in on the rules of the world, what happened, and what's going to happen next.

For better or for worse though, the premise actually manages to take backseat to the snippets of the world and for a while, little seems to actually happen. Despite having hundreds of years to live, Addie never seems to change much. Perhaps it's part of her spell? She never quite manages to 'feel' immortal. Henry is weird and winy, which in the end I totally get, but it takes a while to get there. Luc... I actually really liked the character of Luc. Despite being the least 'human', I think he actually grows and changes the most throughout the store.

It's not a book killer by any means. I actually like the 'slice of life' feel in a much less ordinary world, but I definitely can see how it could be rather polarizing.

Overall, I quite enjoyed it. Well worth the read.

I remember you. ( )

(40) I have been on a roll with best sellers of the type destined to be book-club picks or Netflix adaptations from the library lately. 'The Midnight Library,' and 'The Pull of the Stars,' come to mind. A young woman in the 18th century in a village in France is desperate to be freed from an arranged marriage with an old widower and live a more exciting life. Life is too short to live in the same village you grew up in and tend to children and the hearth fires all day. Her prayers are answered, but not by a god she expects. And so begins the story of a woman who would live forever, but cursed to be forgotten by everyone she meets as soon as she is out of their line of sight. Everyone but one man she comes across in a bookstore 300 years later. ..

This reminded me some of another star-crossed lovers in time fable - 'The Time-Traveler's Wife,' except for not as good. The writing was OK, kept one turning the pages but it was incredibly repetitive and Addie's pseudo-lives in all the different places and times did not come alive. There were some logistical problems with the "rules" put forth by the author re: Addie's curse, so she just kept changing them which felt at times unfair and confusing to the reader. -- She can't keep things - Oh, except for this. Deals can't be broken -- Oh, except this time. You can't take my likeness with a photo -- Oh except like this. I dunno, It began to feel like the book was rather haphazard and aimless.

So just OK for me. It took me a long time to read and I fell asleep easily while reading it. Overall, it was a bit too clever and mawkish for me without great construction nor prose to redeem it. I don't think I would read this author again. I would put big money on the likelihood of a movie adaptation. ( )

Living in a small French village in 1714, Adeline "Addie" LaRue will do anything to avoid marrying a widower and makes a deal with the devil for her freedom, promising herself to him. Suddenly, she is unknown to all and worse, everyone forgets her when she departs. Addie wanders across Europe and America seeking meaning in her life and becoming a muse of sorts. Through the 300 intervening years, Luc as she calls the devil, keeps appearing to ask if she is ready to join him, showing some of his other devotees. Eventually, Addie meets a young man in a bookstore when she steals a Greek language version of the Odyssey. When she tries to exchange the book, she is stunned when Henry remembers her, and they fall in love. Of course, there is a major problem as Henry has also made a deal with Luc in a weak moment, which forces Addie to make the most important decision of her long life. Their romance is very endearing. This sweeping fantasy is as much a love story as it is a tribute to storytelling, art, and inspiration. Schwab’s diverse cast is beautifully rendered, and the view of human connection on offer is biting and bitter, yet introspective and sweet. This ambitious and hopeful work is a knockout.

The old gods may be great, but they are neither kind nor merciful. They are fickle, unsteady as moonlight on water, or shadows in a storm. If you insist on calling them, take heed: be careful what you ask for, be willing to pay the price. And no matter how desperate or dire, never pray to the gods that answer after dark.
