I could not put this book down! Kristin vividly describes the beauty and cruelty of Alaska. And she takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions as you root for Leni, anger at Cora, hatred for Ernt. I had to pause at certain parts, feeling my heart constrict with the same fear and anxiety the characters feel. Redemption at the end for the two strong female leads. Cora and Leni, two peas in a pod. ( ![]() I loved the descriptions of Alaska and her people, although the characters leaned towards caricature. It's a decent exploration of complicated love in several of its nuances. Wrangling a happy ending out of such harsh circumstances—which included trauma, abuse, and an unforgiving environment—seemed too magical to me. Beautifully written, difficult subject matter. If you're a Kristin Hannah fan then you'll enjoy this one. Loved it! PTSD, domestic abused, love, family, friendship, the wilderness and beauty of Alaska all exquisitely tied into this one fabulous book. I think I enjoyed it more than the Nightingale. More 3 1/2 stars. The descriptions of wilderness Alaska were excellent. The overall storyline is a compelling message. Women feel the need to stand by and help their families even when it is not in their best interest. Mental health can be a real concern in the darkness of Alaska as well as the darkness of nightmares. However at times the story just dragged with repetitive comments. It's was quite obvious that Cora was never going to leave her husband although multiple times their was opportunities. Also obvious was that Leni was going to follow in her mother's footsteps. Leni became as obsessed with Mathew as Cora was with her husband. Message that Love overcomes logical thinking. Amazed at the strength that women can do to survive in such harshness. Amazed at anyone is happy living is such conditions. Sense ressenyes | afegeix-hi una ressenya
Lenora Allbright is 13 when her father convinces her mother, Cora, to forgo their inauspicious existence in Seattle and move to Kaneq, AK. It's 1974, and the former Vietnam POW sees a better future away from the noise and nightmares that plague him. Having been left a homestead by a buddy who died in the war, Ernt is secure in his beliefs, but never was a family less prepared for the reality of Alaska, the long, cold winters and isolation. Locals want to help out, especially classmate Matthew Walker, who likes everything about Leni. Yet the harsh conditions bring out the worst in Ernt, whose paranoia takes over their lives and exacerbates what Leni sees as the toxic relationship between her parents. The Allbrights are as green as greenhorns can be, and even first love must endure unimaginable hardship and tragedy as the wilderness tries to claim more victims.
