"Inspired by a true story, this is the unforgettable story of a young boy named Ernest, set during the 1909 Seattle world's fair called the Alaska Yukon Pacific Expo. It is a time when the magical wonders of technology on display at the expo future seems limitless. But for Ernest, a half-Chinese orphan who found his way to America through a last desperate act of his beloved mother, every door is closed. A charity student at a boarding school, he has never really had a place to call home. Then one day, his wealthy sponsor announces that if a home is what he wants, then that is what he will have: Ernest will be offered as a prize in the daily raffle at the fair, advertised as "Healthy boy to a good home for the winning ticket holder." The woman who "wins" him is the madam of a notorious brothel who was famous for educating her girls. He becomes a houseboy in her brothel and is befriended by the daughter of the madam, as well as a Japanese girl who works in the kitchen. The friendship and love between these three form the first real family Ernest has ever known"--… (més)

This book is the best kind of blend of historical and fiction. A wonderful story, compelling characters and at every turn a new tidbit about Seattle's history. I enjoyed the entire book from start to finish.

Loved the history, the story less so. ( )

I was so thrilled when I received this as part of a Once Upon a Book Club special edition box. I had recently read Jamie Ford’s “Songs of Willow Frost”, which I had picked up at a local library used book sale, and absolutely loved it. So, chances were good that I would love this one too and it did not disappoint!

The subject matter appealed to me right away. Ever since attending Expo ’86 in Vancouver, British Columbia I’ve been fascinated by world’s fairs. This fascination was redoubled when I read Erik Larson’s “Devil in the White City” which highlighted the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. This one features two fairs 50 years apart, which hold special meaning for me as they take place in my “home region” of Seattle: the 1909 World’s Fair, as well as the 1962 Century 21 Exposition, which my mother attended for her high school senior graduation trip. Thirdly, the tale focuses on a young boy who was adopted - adoption stories always pull at my heart strings as my father was adopted at 11 months old – and from the Seattle area.

So, without further backstory from me (ha ha) I can tell you this was an exceptional book. Ford is a master storyteller who excels at evoking mood of time and place. Just looking at the beautiful book cover gives me the chills as I remember how strongly I was drawn into this haunting but lovely story.

Ernest Young is a 12-year-old orphan boy of Chinese descent who is thrilled when his boarding school offers the chance to attend the 1909 World’s fair until the unthinkable happens when he learns that he himself is one of the prizes being given away at the fair. Before you think to yourself that this is too incredible of a tale to believe, be assured that Ford based this on the true story of a baby being raffled off at this fair.

Ernest is “won” by a local madam and grows up in a bordello where he is enchanted by the beautiful women and finally has a family, which he has never known before, unusual as it is.

Fast forward to 1962 and the World’s Fair of ’62 (the one that built the Space Needle and the Monorail elevated train) and all of Ernest’s memories come flooding back. And in their wake, Ernest has to choose between revealing the past to share with his precious children or protecting things that are better left hidden.

One of the best books I’ve read in a long time. You won’t be disappointed.

I received an ARC ebook from Netgalley in exchange for a review.
Definitely a 5 star read for me. I loved the characters in this book and found myself unable to put the book down as I wanted to know more. It was very moving and extremely well written. A book I would highly recommend to friends. ( )
