The Untold History of the United States de Oliver Stone (PlaidStallion)
PlaidStallion: Give him a break, he is left handed.

Experts would debate the precise number of Iraqi children who died as a result of the sanctions. In December 1995, two UN-affiliated researchers, writing in the British medical journal The Lancet, placed the number at 567,000 but later lowered that estimate. In 2003, British Prime Minister Tony Blair, speaking at a joint press conference with George Bush, said, “Over the past five years, 400,000 Iraqi children under the age of five died of malnutrition and disease,” using that as an excuse to justify an invasion that would add tens of thousands more to that total.

Though Clinton resisted the pressure to invade, he and his secretary of state laid the rhetorical groundwork for Bush and Cheney. Albright warned, “Iraq is a long way from [the United States], but what happens there matters a great deal here. For the risks that the leaders of a rogue state will use nuclear, chemical or biological weapons against us or our allies is the greatest security threat we face.” On another occasion, Albright had the audacity to declare, “If we have to use force, it is because we are America; we are the indispensable nation. We stand tall and we see further than other countries into the future.”

I read and reviewed this book three years ago and didn't remember it. Seems more pertinent now that Trump is gone and now that some hacking has happened. The epilogue seems especially pertinent in view of the end of Trump's "reign." I will read the next book co-authored by Clinton with Patterson due out this summer. ( )

An interesting tale of political intrigue that includes a healthy dose of technology and traditional plots and pacing. Straining believability at times for literary reasons was to be expected, I suppose. All in all I enjoyed this book and recommend it for people who enjoy political and thriller genres. ( )

I noticed that this book had occupied the top seller list for a month and thought it would be worth a shot. The story starts with the US president facing likely impeachment for helping a terrorist get away from pursuers. From there on it's expanding on that story, the terrorist, not the impeachment. The book is mostly non-political, with the book president repeatedly expressing dismay at "politics" infecting the decision making, and mostly ignoring "politics".

I don't know how much of the book is by Bill Clinton and how much is by Patterson. If it's a first Clinton book, it's not bad. If it's mostly by a more experienced writer as Patterson, he should have been able to do better. The work division might never become public.

The story is uneven. It's a cyberterrorism thriller where a super-human virus is out there. A virus that has a lot of correct technical background, but also an awful lot of simplifications, of the "GUI interface using Visual Basic to track the killer's IP address" kind. (That was from CSI). Luckily for our society, the simplifications hide the reasons why the book virus could not exist in real world.

The best parts is how the president interacts with his surroundings. As the writer is Bill Clinton, US President 1993-2000, we can assume that it's mostly correct and that makes it much more interesting. A key observation is how much the President depends on a few key aides, or cabinet members, or department heads. Much just "happens", and the President doesn't have to know or care about how it happens.

Late in the book there is a rather long speech that doesn't add much to the book, but as the character says, if he has the chance, he should take it, and I think that was exactly how Clinton thought when he wrote (?) the book.

All in all, it's an ok thriller, but if he's going to write more they have to be better for me to care about them. ( )

Enjoyed it a lot, tight, realistic, fast with a bit of a message as well... ( )

Meh, I can't believe JP put his name on this book. Then again I probably wouldn't have read it if it wasn't. Around chapter 70, it got so dull. The plot isn't new, and very predictable. The part where Clinton insert his expertise turns out to be boring. I had thought it would be interesting to know the scoops he had through the years in the WH.
I just updated that I read/listen 80%, after disc 9 I had skip disc 10 to the last even though I like Dennis Quaid, I had enough. I wish the President was abducted and was rescued or fought his way to freedom (after all he's a war hero) with a big action finale.
