There are some flaws, thin characters and some janky plot moves, but the style and anger are the main show and carry the book. The Belles is unique. The premise is one not often seen in fantasy; ideas and ideals of beauty usually live in contemporary books. However, this beautiful book has its monster in a Moriarty-esque sociopath that sends chills through even the most seasoned reader. Clayton's fairytale world of young women destined to bring beauty to a world and people gone gray is gripping, enchanting, thought-provoking, and terrifyingly real to anyone who's ever wondered what it's like to be beautiful. I already can't wait for the sequel! (
