2018 Spring:

A friend threw me at a recording of Sabrina Benaim reading "Explaining Depression to My Mother" and it was so passionately on key I felt the need to pick this book up right after. I loved this tome, and have recommended it out to three other people since. Her poetry in short, sharp, full of every feeling, and grabs you by the shoulders from the second you start. You feel her longing and her love, as well as her pain and frantic changes.

I will be keeping an eye on this one for further publications. ( )

Poetry
This book is definitely one for high school students, as it deals with some pretty heavy topics sometimes. This book of poems details different struggles some individuals may have with mental health issues, including but not limited to depression and anxiety.

I borrowed this book from the library because I love her poem First Date. The others I enjoyed as well, but they didn't jump out at me quite the same. ( )

I won't pretend to know a hoot about poetry, but this is a wonderful collection. Easily one of the best books I've read this year. I loved the poet's way with words.

There are times when you feel something but don't know how to express it. You may not know how to explain your thoughts to others because you can't find the right words or the closest metaphor. Sabrina Benaim nails such emotions and views with beautiful imagery.

Sometimes, you may be confused about your own feelings and books can help you process them and understand yourself. That is what this poetry collection did to me. Part of it was relatable. Part of it was moving. All of it was beautiful. Highly recommended.

Note: I received a free copy of the book from the publisher. This has not influenced my review in any way. A big thanks to Button Poetry for the ARC! ( )

The title says it all--this book was pretty depressing. I could relate to some of the poems--particularly the one where she is trying to explain depression to her mom but her mom has no clue. Some of the poems, however, were completely off the wall which I guess is to be expected from someone who is depressed. My absolute favorite poem was "seven small ways in which i loved myself this week". That poem was just genius.

I received a free copy from netgalley in exchange for an honest review. ( )
