"An astonishingly incisive and suspenseful novel about a scandal amongst Britain's privileged elite and the women caught up in its wake. Sophie's husband James is a loving father, a handsome man, a charismatic and successful public figure. And yet he stands accused of a terrible crime. Sophie is convinced he is innocent and desperate to protect her precious family from the lies that threaten to rip them apart. Kate is the lawyer hired to prosecute the case: an experienced professional who knows that the law is all about winning the argument. And yet Kate seeks the truth at all times. She is certain James is guilty and is determined he will pay for his crimes. Who is right about James? Sophie or Kate? And is either of them informed by anything more than instinct and personal experience? Despite her privileged upbringing, Sophie is well aware that her beautiful life is not inviolable. She has known it since she and James were first lovers, at Oxford, and she witnessed how easily pleasure could tip into tragedy. Most people would prefer not to try to understand what passes between a man and a woman when they are alone: alone in bed, alone in an embrace, alone in an elevator ... Or alone in the moonlit courtyard of an Oxford college, where a girl once stood before a boy, heart pounding with excitement, then fear. Sophie never understood why her tutorial partner Holly left Oxford so abruptly. What would she think, if she knew the truth?"--… (més)

I picked this up off the library's new fiction shelf. It was a quick and fairly absorbing story about a young British MP accused of rape by his even younger Parliamentary assistant, with whom he had recently broken off an affair. The back stories of the MP, his wife, the prosecuting QC and the sitting Prime Minister are all explored from various points of view. As we move back and forth in time, we learn some secrets from the past that play a role in the present drama; it's skillfully structured to get the reader involved in sorting out the truth.

I really enjoyed this book! I have had this book on my shelf for years but never got around to it for some reason. I recently heard that there is now a Netflix show based on this book so I thought that this would be the perfect time to finally pick it up. I liked this book from the start and had a hard time setting it down when life got in the way. I am so glad that I finally gave this book a try.

This book is told from several different points of view. James is a married father of two that holds a prestigious position in government. Sophie is his wife who feels that she must stand behind her husband even though he hasn’t been the best partner. Kate is the lawyer who is bringing a case against James. This book is a legal thriller with much of the book occurring around events in court. In addition to the scenes in court, we see how the key players are being impacted by the case. The book also delves into the past to really give the reader all the backstory needed to understand how things evolved the way they did.

I think that the book had a realistic feel to it. It was a story of power and privilege featuring flawed characters. James was easy to hate but Sophie and Kate seemed to be trying their best to deal with the situation that they found themselves in. There were some twists and turns in the story that I did not see coming which kept me glued to the story. I thought that this book did a great job of dealing with some difficult issues in a realistic and entertaining manner.

I thought that the cast of narrators did a great job with this story. Each narrator did a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life. I liked having different narrators read the various points of view since it made it very clear when the perspective had shifted. They all had very pleasant voices and were able to add just the right amount of emotion to their reading.

I would definitely recommend this book to others. I was pulled into this story right away and couldn’t wait to see how things would work out for the key players. I would not hesitate to read more of this author’s work in the future.

I received a review copy of this book from Atria Books and borrowed a copy of the audiobook. ( )

Sophie is married to James Whitehouse, a junior member of the British Parliament. James admits he was having an affair with one of his aides, but their accounts differ on what happened a week after their break-up in the elevator. James claims there was consensual sex. Olivia says she was raped. The book is told in present day and flashback timelines and from the POV of multiple female characters who all have some sort of history with James. We see the characters in their college days in the flashback timeline, while the present-day narrative deals with James’ trial. This was a well written book that captured the realities of prosecuting a trial under these circumstances. I found that there were only 1-2 characters I liked (most of them are rather unlikeable to one degree or another), but the plot was well crafted and interesting enough that I wanted to keep reading. This is a very gripping political and legal thriller.

The scandal of the title refers to an affair between James Whitehouse, a Conservative Mp and junior minister and one of his research staff. The novel opens with the news of the affair breaking. Whitehouse’s wife is expecting him to return home on a Friday evening in time to get changed and then head out to a dinner party. Instead, he turns up late, and has to tell her that the following morning’s newspaper’s will be carrying stories about the affair.

The seriousness of his position intensifies when the researcher alleges that, after he had ended the relationship, in a subsequent encounter he raped her. The bulk of the book covers the progress of the subsequent trial, with flashbacks from various characters.

Sarah Vaughan’s management of the plot is excellent. The story develops, following various sinuous twists but always remaining highly plausible. It also allows for a stark exploration of the attitudes of entitlement among strata of society, and an almost wilful inability to see things from another person’s perspective.

The descriptions of Westminster and the byways of parliament with which I am familiar through my job as parliamentary clerk for my Civil Service department, are spot on. That verisimilitude lends strength to other aspects of the plot.

I don’t want to say much more about the story for fear of inadvertent spoilers. It is, however, utterly engrossing and highly convincing. ( )

A mix of first and third person POVs drives this story of a hard-nosed lawyer, Kate Woodcroft, intent on finding the charismatic James Whitehouse, an up-and-coming member of parliament, guilty of rape, an accusation made against him by the woman with whom he’d had a short affair. Sophie, his wife and university girlfriend, has to believe that everything he says, in court and out, is true. But her conviction is rocky, to say the least, because of THAT event in their final university year…

A couple of things irritated me…one, an odd ‘eh, ek, hn, hk, io, il, sy, SY' that ended most chapters. What on earth? Second…either the author or her editors seemed to have suddenly discovered the semicolon, the colon and the n dash and thought it would be a really jolly idea to put them in everywhere. And I mean EVERYWHERE, ninety-nine percent of the time incorrectly used. They really became a hurdle and a real annoyance. The text didn’t flow, and I very nearly put the book into my Kindle’s delete folder.

I don’t think this enthralled me as much as it should have done. I would have liked more of the plot to be driven by a bit more dialogue rather than (sometimes tedious) narrative, but for all that, I enjoyed it, the way it was written and the little surprises along the way. ( )
