From the Erica Spindler, the New York Times bestselling author of Justice for Sara and The First Wife, comes The Other Girl, a chilling new thriller about a ritualistic murder of a college professor that sends a small town cop back into the trauma she thought she'd put behind her.

A horrific crime. One witnessâ??a fifteen year old girl from the wrong side of the tracks, one known for lying and her own brushes with the law.

Is it any surprise no one believed her?

Officer Miranda Rader of the Harmony, Louisiana PD is known for her honesty, integrity, and steady hand in a crisisâ??but that wasn't always so. Miranda comes from the town of Jasper, a place about the size of a good spit on a hot day, and her side of the tracks was the wrong one. She's worked hard to earn the respect of her coworkers and the community.

When Miranda and her partner are called to investigate the murder of one of the town's most beloved college professors, they're unprepared for the brutality of the scene. This murder is unlike any they've ever investigated, and just when Miranda thinks she's seen the worst of it, she finds a piece of evidence that chills her to the core: a faded newspaper clipping about that terrible night fifteen years ago. The night she'd buried, along with her past and the girl she'd been back then. Until now that grave had stayed sealed...except for those times, in the deepest part of the night, when the nightmares came: of a crime no one believed happened and the screams of the girl they believed didn't exist.

Then another man turns up dead, this one a retired cop. Not just any copâ??the one who took her statement that night. Two murders, two very different men, two killings that on the surface had nothing in commonâ??except Miranda.

While this dealt with the important topic of sexual assault and was a quick read, there was nothing in this that really stood out to me from other thrillers.

Unlike with other books, this one didn't have me on my toes and I was always kind of sure that everything would work out. I mean, 95% of books have everything work out, but normally I'm not entirely sure. Because of that, I never really felt nervous or tense or anxious about how the book would end.

This might be because I never really felt connected to Miranda. Sure, she has a tragedy in her backstory and a stubborn personality, but I couldn't quite bring myself to really care about her. The subplot of romance was more a subplot of sex and not something I entirely appreciated, perhaps because I felt like she was settling.

I did very much appreciate the statement that the book made about sexual assault and how commonly it goes unreported. Power and influence in the hands of a perpetrator create a serious problem, and this book is not afraid to examine these subjects. This is the biggest strength to the story.

This book is worth your time if you're looking for a decent book to fill some time, but it's not one I'll be raving about.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. ( )

After a life-changing incident when she was a troubled fifteen-year-old, half a lifetime ago, Miranda Rader has made something of herself. Now she is a police officer in small town Louisiana. Then the gruesome murder of a college professor dredges up the past, and it has Miranda questioning herself and her relationship with her friends and colleagues. When evidence found at the crime scene points to Miranda as the culprit, she fears for her safety. It seems like her partner Jake is the one person she can trust. Or can she?

This thriller is short enough to read in a single evening, and that’s a good thing, because most readers will want to keep reading until the truth is revealed. Seasoned readers of this genre will likely guess the murderer’s identity pretty easily, and they probably won’t be fooled by the halfhearted red herrings the author throws in at the last minute. The sense of place isn’t as strong as I would have liked. It could have been set in a small town just about anywhere in the U.S. However, the characters are interesting, and it’s satisfying to see Miranda’s growth through the course of the novel. ( )

This is a book that surprised me, a lot! The Other Girl's cover and blurb intrigued me, but I had never read anything by Erica Spindler before so I wasn't sure the book would suit me. I read a lot of thrillers, and it takes a lot nowadays to really charm me.

However, this book had everything I wanted in a thriller, a compelling story, well-developed characters and an ending that made me question my conviction on whom the killer is. Seriously, I was quite sure for a long time who the killer was, but at the end, did Spindler twist the story so much, and throw in a couple of red herrings that made me question my belief. I won't tell you if I was right or not, but I ended up quite pleased with the resolution.

I can say that this is the kind of book that, despite perhaps not being that surprising still engrossed me from the beginning until the end. I was captivated. I'm so delighted in this book that I need to find me some more Erica Spindler books to read.

So, in the end, I just want to say that The Other Girl is a superb thriller, a page-turner that kept me entertained all the way until the end!

I want to thank the publisher for providing me with a free copy through NetGalley for an honest review! ( )

This was my first Erica Spindler novel. Honestly at first, I did not think I could finish it. It started off very slow. But I kept with it, and I'm glad I did.
The writing seemed so amateur in the beginning, I would have thought I was reading a debut novel. Ultimately, there were many twists that made the book worth the read...if you can get past the first half. ( )
