I went into this book with no expectations because I didn’t want to be influenced by social media, since it’s a pretty popular book. But I can say now that I thoroughly enjoyed it and that I look forward to the wicked king. I am a bug fan of reading about faerie politics and for me the romance subplot doesn’t have to be anything more than that, a subplot. I understand how some people wanted more romance and thus were disappointed but I loved how Jude didn’t get that influenced by Cardan, which I did expect. I read this in barely 4 days which shows that I was bot bored during the entirety of the book at all. Really liked it, will probably read again. ( ![]() I had read a few of Holly Black's earlier books and found them lacking. Not so with the The Cruel Prince! The narrative moves quickly with lots of action, the MC is likable (or at least not DISlikable), the world is fairly comprehensible and, of course, there is a truly wonderful/awful romance. One annoying bit was the amount of internal dialogue during the action sequences. If all that had been cut the narrative would have read much smoother. Definitely the best YA guilty pleasure I've read since Leigh Bardugo's Six of Crows. I had read a few of Holly Black's earlier books and found them lacking. Not so with the The Cruel Prince! A driven, cunning woman whose ambition knows no bounds. I thoroughly enjoyed her plight to find her place among the magical and beautiful creatures of Faerie. There were delicious villains, deception, lies, hidden promises and magical glamours aplenty. Holly has written some fantastic characters where an overwhelming hatred for each other drips off the page. I am thrilled to finally get to read the rest of this series! Loved it! An instant bestseller! By #1 New York Times bestselling author Holly Black, the first book in a stunning new series about a mortal girl who finds herself caught in a web of royal faerie intrigue. Of course I want to be like them. They're beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever. And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe. Jude was seven years old when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King. To win a place at the Court, she must defy him--and face the consequences. In doing so, she becomes embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, discovering her own capacity for bloodshed. But as civil war threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.
