But as they settle into the routine of their life together, they are ripped apart by circumstances neither could have imagined. Roy is arrested and sentenced to twelve years for a crime Celestial knows he didn't commit. Though fiercely independent, Celestial finds herself bereft and unmoored, taking comfort in Andre, her childhood friend, and best man at their wedding. As Roy's time in prison passes, she is unable to hold on to the love that has been her center. The execution was flawed at times but the ideas/conflicts were absorbing. I get Jones chose to focus on marriage in the backdrop of the black experience, but she sped through time so quickly I was too whiplashed by the initial set-up of the false conviction to feel sympathy for anyone other than Roy. Though the book explored a morally ambiguous limbo of a slowly fraying relationship, I had intense and often unequivocal opinions; it made me wonder if my inability to understand Celestial was my own internalized sexism. An American Marriage
By Tayari Jones
2018, Algonquin Books
Hardcover, 308pp

"When something happens that eclipses the imaginable, it changes a person."

A book so devastating and visceral you can't put it down. Within the rough fabric of a fresh, delicate marriage, a failed justice system, and the continued struggles of the New South, is a story that hits hardest for its moral complication. Told in alternating first-person perspectives of the three principal characters, An American Marriage takes a familiar plot and exposes the raw underbelly of the bruised human spirit. What is marriage? What is love? What is right and wrong? What is the power of a blood relationship in light of emotional connection? What is the power balance between a man and a woman? These are but a few of the questions Tayari Jones's striking novel inspects. ( )

This is a troubling read. Roy and Celestial haven't been married that long when he is sent to prison for a crime he didn't commit. She stands by him at first, but as time goes on, she finds it difficult to cling to the hope of a marriage that had just barely begun. Roy struggles to hold on, but is devastated when Celestial tells him she will continue to support him, but she can no longer be his wife. When Roy's conviction is finally overturned, they both struggle to see if there is anything left of their marriage. I tried to put myself in the place of the main characters, and found myself sympathizing at times, and angry with them at other times. All the characters, both main and supporting, are well drawn. The book is well written. I was really involved with the story, and the ending was satisfying--and while it was not the one I hoped for, it was probably more realistic. ( )

New York Times Bestseller, newlyweds Celestial and Roy are a young black couple embodying the American Dream, until Roy is forced into jail for a crime he didn’t commit. As Roy remains in prison, Celestial falls out of love with him. When he is released, he returns home looking to continue their life together. This is a story of a couple bound by love, torn apart by forces outside of their control. It’s a deeply moving novel about looking to the past in order to move on into a hopeful future.

I had read mixed reviews of this novel but was still keen to read it as it had won the Womens Prize for Fiction 2019.
I was not disappointed. I found myself wanting to return to it at every opportunity.
Celestial and Roy meet through a mutual friend, Andre while studying at university. when their paths again cross a few years later, they embark on a relationship which leads to marriage. Their parents, although supportive of their decision, retain doubts as they come from different backgrounds.
In the second year of their marriage, Roy is accused and charged with rape. He is sentenced to 12 years imprisonment. He is innocent and once again this is an example of the injustice that African-Americans face in the courtrooms. Celestial's family hire an old family friend to represent him in the ongoing appeals to overturn the charges. Celestial tries to faithfully support Roy with letters and visits. However after several years, she begins to lose hope and focuses on pursuing her own dreams. Andre her lifelong friend is her constant and following the death of Roy's mother, their relationship changes from friends to lovers. Five years into his sentence Roy is discharged without recompense or apology and sets out to reclaim his wife and rebuild his life.
This book is very topical and relevant to events in America in recent years. ( )
