The muscle car era, and the era that immediately preceded it, are a unique window in time; it is one that we will not likely see again. Post-war USA was a place where people wanted to move on from the horrors of conflict, to embrace an era of peace, and to pursue, well, all sorts of things. A whole generation was entering a new prosperity, with home ownership on the rise, gainful employment increasing, the building of suburbs, and a new interstate system connecting everyone. That all helped increase our dependence upon, and in turn, deepen our love affair with the automobile. It started in the 1950s, when automakers realized that if they made their cars more powerful than brand X and won races on the weekends as well, sales would follow those victories into the dealership. Not everybody was enamored with all this new-found performance, however, and throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s, a struggle developed between building faster automobiles and appearing responsible and promoting the cause of safety. This led to racing participation on an all-out corporate level, followed by voluntary self-imposed and publicized bans, back-door cheating on said bans, and then investing in performance again.A byproduct of all this activity was some really fascinating and exciting cars. It began with standard-chassis cars growing bigger and including more powerful engines. Then they graduated to being lighter, putting big engines into mid-size chassis (muscle cars), and building race cars that barely resembled anything on the street. Detroit Muscle: Factory Lightweights and Purpose-Built Muscle Cars follows the evolution of the fastest, most powerful, and exciting vehicles of the era, in both drag racing and NASCAR. From early Hudson Hornets, to the birth of the Hemi, to aluminum and fiberglass panel sedans, to lightweight special-order muscle cars ready to race from the factory.… (més)

I received this book as part of the early reviewers program. Wonderful illustrations and easy to read descriptions. It is making the rounds now at our car club. Receiving all positive reviews. ( )

Very interesting book. Covers the different manufactures of muscle cars, year by year. The kind of book one can pick up and browse through and find something interesting every time. Great photos. I love to build model cars, and will keep this book handy to refer to for details to use. ( )

Interesting book - not sure how to rate. I like muscle cars, shiny or not, have family own some. I think this book is written really for users of really special cars, just out of Detroit (like in the title), but showing lots and lots of details. A coffee table book for vintage car enthusiasts, something to share with other enthusiasts - less for folks more going for the looks of these cars, like me. Right audience likely great, for me, not so much. ( )

Guest review by my 14-year old car loving daughter:

This book is informative, if at times very technical. It has a plethora of very nice photos, and is well written throughout. After reading this book, I can say with certainty that I know much more about the subject than when I began the book. Although it does get technical more than a few times, it's still a manageable length, which is very nice for someone who likes to read books from cover to cover. A great book for someone more than slightly interested in American muscle cars and sports cars! ( )

I received this book as a free give-away through the LTER. I was fascinated by the beautiful color pictures and the detailed descriptions. This book will actually be even more enjoyed by our Son-in-Law who loves to build car models and is always interested in finding the perfect colors and details. ( )
