Yes, you can read an entire book about tea. Why? Because matcha is no ordinary tea. And, if social media is any indication, it is quickly unseating coffee as the energy-boosting drink of choice. Why? Because this powdered green tea's caffeine kick produces no jitters, no crash, and--if that's not convincing enough--gives you fl ow-state energy coupled with mental clarity. Sound too good to be true? It isn't. Matcha: A Lifestyle Guide offers everything one needs to enjoy the green goodness at a matcha bar or in the home kitchen. Featuring dozens of recipes for sweet and savory foods as well as matcha-based drinks and cocktails, this is the fi rst book to cover both sides of matcha--ancient beverage and contemporary superfood--and is an essential guide for both matcha novices and the already converted.… (més)

Feel a bit uneasy about the book. On a whim I decided to check out this book since I saw my library had it on display. I had not heard of the book before seeing it on display but I do like matcha.

The book is a lovely looking coffee-table book about...matcha. What it is, the history of it, how to prepare it, its place in tea history, how to identify good matcha, some matcha recipes, etc. Clearly it's a book meant to take advantage of the huge hype that's going on with matcha becoming a new trend that's going on.

Unfortunately there are a few things going on in the book just make me hesitate quite a bit. For example, within the first chapter the authors talk about buying matcha from anywhere but Japan. "Purchasing tea from anywhere but Japan is like buying a counterfeit Goyard handbag..." (pg 9). They don't discuss that matcha is originally from China. And as matcha is *A* tea, it's unclear if the authors specifically meant purchasing matcha or tea in general. It's either bad editing/writing or a lack of understanding of tea.

In a later chapter they discuss matcha bars (these exist??) and how to find good ones and bad ones. Good ones include playing David Bowie or Fleetwood Mac, dates from Tinder happening there or Gweneth Paltrow being in line. A bad sign is a presence of a man bun. To be fair they have other qualities about the matcha itself (good and bad) to serve as guidelines but the book attempts to be too "cute" and current.

According to the author bios, they have written articles and what not in topics including food, beverages, travel and health/wellness. Apparently one of them spent 15 days in Japan learning about tea ceremony, tea, etc. The book does reference to experts and people with experience with tea but as far as I can tell this is just a hobby for the authors. It's fine if they love it and wanted to share their love of matcha with others but I would look elsewhere if I wanted to purchase a coffee book table on matcha or keep as a resource. It's pretty to look at, though.

Library borrow if it's all you've got available to start with but the internet can point you to better sources.   ( )
