Finalist for the National Book Award for Fiction "[These stories] vibrate with originality, queerness, sensuality and the strange."--Roxane Gay "In these formally brilliant and emotionally charged tales, Machado gives literal shape to women's memories and hunger and desire. I couldn't put it down."--Karen Russell In Her Body and Other Parties, Carmen Maria Machado blithely demolishes the arbitrary borders between psychological realism and science fiction, comedy and horror, fantasy and fabulism. While her work has earned her comparisons to Karen Russell and Kelly Link, she has a voice that is all her own. In this electric and provocative debut, Machado bends genre to shape startling narratives that map the realities of women's lives and the violence visited upon their bodies. A wife refuses her husband's entreaties to remove the green ribbon from around her neck. A woman recounts her sexual encounters as a plague slowly consumes humanity. A salesclerk in a mall makes a horrifying discovery within the seams of the store's prom dresses. One woman's surgery-induced weight loss results in an unwanted houseguest. And in the bravura novella "Especially Heinous," Machado reimagines every episode ofLaw & Order: Special Victims Unit, a show we naïvely assumed had shown it all, generating a phantasmagoric police procedural full of doppelgängers, ghosts, and girls with bells for eyes. Earthy and otherworldly, antic and sexy, queer and caustic, comic and deadly serious,Her Body and Other Partiesswings from horrific violence to the most exquisite sentiment. In their explosive originality, these stories enlarge the possibilities of contemporary fiction.… (més)

The intersection of queerness and horror here was very enjoyable to me, because none of the horror was about being queer, and horror works better in short story format than a lot of other genres in my opinion. ( )

In graduate school, a professor once explained how much harder it was to sell a collection of short stories rather than a novel to a publisher. Perhaps that explains why Her Body and Other Parties was published by a small press. Small press or not, Carmen Maria Machado has written a collection of stories that not only push against the traditional genre but held my attention from the minute I started the stories. I could not stop reading this book. I’m not really into science fiction but this was just edgy enough to not overstep my ability to accept the mystical elements that the women experienced. There is a healthy mix of desire and violence as the focus is on the physical experiences of women throughout the collection. This book was short listed for the National Book Award and it is completely warranted. ( )

It took me two beers and twenty minutes in a dark room to be okay after reading this, it is that amazing. ( )

This collection blew me away. The author crafted sentences that I read again and again. Her way of writing is so original and creative — like nothing I’ve read before. The stories were dark and haunting and so incredibly well-written. I savored them. ( )

First of all, the collection is very queer (only 2 stories features a heterosexual couple) and matter-of-fact about it, which I love. But maybe her style isn't for me. Every story has at least one little quirk in it that's so interesting, but it's unexplored in favor of the relationships between characters, and I'm more plot-driven.

"The Husband Stitch" - 4
A really interesting story based off an old folktale about a woman with a green ribbon o her neck. I have a few questions (like why the ribbon is on a different place for each woman, which makes no sense), and I don't think I quite got the message, but it's so well written and entertaining that it doesn't matter.

"Inventory" - 3
A tale of the end of the world told through an inventory of who the narrator has been with. Really interesting concept, but didn't quite land and I'm not quite sure why. Maybe too much emphasis on the relationships rather than the plot (but I'm sure that's what she wanted)?

"Mothers" - 2
Confusing. Two women have a baby(?) and one becomes abusive(?) and they stay together for a while but then break up(?).

"Especially Heinous" - 4
So so interesting (a story told through "episodes" of a Law and Order ripoff), and I didn't want to like it but I did. Just missed 5 stars because I wanted and needed a little more explanation (Who are the doppelgängers?? Why did they appear? What was up with things passing through them and affecting random people?? Give me more!)

"Real Women Have Bodies" - 3
Eh. Interesting enough, I guess, but not spectacular. Women have started to literally disappear, and find themselves drawn towards objects.

"Eight Bites" - 3
A woman undergoes some kind of bariatric surgery to lose weight. ANOTHER one where I was left wanting and questioning (what was up with the doctor?), reading into the story for something that would have made it better but not finding it.

"The Resident" - 3
An atmospheric story about a woman at a strange writer's retreat.

"Difficult at Parties" - 4
A woman is traumatized after a break in and implied sexual assault, and while trying to repair her life discovers that she can hear the thoughts of porn actors. This one struck a good balance between grounded with a slight fantastic edge. ( )
