One hot cop. One bar owner out for redemption. One smoking-hot summer fling destined to leave scorch marks . . . Mason Hanks has returned to Rainbow Cove, Oregon with one goal in mind: turn the struggling coastal community into a thriving LGBTQ tourism destination. Step one is transforming an old bar and grill into a gay-friendly eatery. Step two? Don't piss off Nash Flint, the very hot, very stern chief of police who's not so sure he's on board with Mason's big plans. Nash Flint just wants to keep his community safe and enjoy the occasional burger in peace. He's not big on change nor is he a fan of Mason's troublemaking family, especially his rowdy older brothers. But Mason slowly wins him over with fantastic cooking and the sort of friendship Nash has been starving for. When their unlikely friendship takes a turn for the sexy, both men try to steer clear of trouble. Nash believes he's too set in his ways for Mason, and Mason worries that his family's reputation will ruin any future with Nash. Burning up the sheets in secret is a surefire way to crash and burn, and discovery forces a heart-wrenching decision-is love worth the risk of losing everything? Contains mature themes.… (més)

Somewhat angsty m/m romance set in a small coastal town between Mason Hanks, the newly returned son of the local troublemakers and Nash Flint, the older closeted chief of police.

I was expecting this to be a lot more lighthearted and flirty than it actually was. It's not all angst but there is a fair bit of drama and emotional scenes that aren't really my cup of tea and that I wasn't really in the mood for either. There was a tiny bit of (pretty obvious) mystery and a few appearances by other characters when the plot was remembered but mostly the focus was on Mason and Nash.

For all Mason and Nash are the focus there is not really a lot of romance beyond mild mentions of attraction until much later in the book. Mostly they talk and cook and have angsty inner thoughts about not getting involved with each other. It was an okay read, 2.5 stars, rounded to 2. ( )

This is a great start to a series, introducing the small town and many characters while we get to know Mason Hanks and his baggage, versus Chief Nash Flint and his sense of duty that's kept him in the closet so many years. Age difference, disapproving relatives, and fears. They have a lot to overcome. ( )

Trust with a Chaser is the first book in the ‘Rainbow Cove’ series. It stars Mason Hanks, restaurant owner, and Nash Flint, chief of police. This is told in first person from both Mason and Nash’s povs.

First the cover. I’m not sure who that is on the cover. Nash is close to forty, and the cover model doesn’t look anywhere near that age. I’m guessing it’s supposed to be Mason, but it certainly doesn’t look how the story conveyed him. In fact, I don’t remember much of a description for Mason, but I know the cover model doesn’t seem anything like Mason. So, I’m going with the cover doesn’t represent the book.

I do have a question about the title. Titles usually refer to something in the book or about the couple, but this one doesn’t seem to refer to anything. It sounds like a cocktail, but Mason owns a restaurant, not a bar. Chaser could refer to a cop chasing a suspect, or Mason chasing after Nash, but the whole title doesn’t seem to represent anything obvious, which it should.

The blurb does a good job of describing the plot but not the emotions involved with the characters. The author did a great job with Nash and Mason’s emotions as both fought their attraction and tried to stop growing closer. Both men had past history. Mason’s family was known for causing trouble, and the Hanks family hated Flint for catching and arresting them. The Hanks were looked down upon in the small town they lived in. People expected Nash to do his duty as chief, be responsible, and stay away from anyone named Hanks. Mason got too much flack from his friends to stay away from uptight Flint. They kept their relationship on the down low.

The first pov wasn’t that obvious. Usually, first person pov stories are sort of in your face with the characters’ monologues. But the writing here was mellow, low key, even when the emotions were high. And when the scenes slid into dialogue and back to monologue, it was smooth, and I didn’t notice any jarring change between the two. The author did a good job creating distinct character voices for Nash and Mason and carrying on those voices throughout the story.

Mason and Nash have a significant age difference, almost twenty years. Mason was an upbeat person. He was outgoing and liked a challenge, and his challenge was trying to get Nash to smile, be his friend, and if he was lucky, score. Nash on the other hand, didn’t want anything to do with Mason. He had his routine and he still saw Mason as part of the troublesome Hanks family. But little by little Mason wiggled his way into talking with Nash. Nash was so lonely he started to let Mason in. Everyone in town and his own family expected Nash to be like his father, super dedicated to his work, even though his dad died in his fifties from a stroke. Nash wasn’t like that but the ghostly voice of his dad was always in his head. He’d lived so long listening to others and that voice, he didn’t know what he wanted for himself, until Mason came along. And that included coming out. Nash was terrified of people in town learning he was gay. Mason seemed like a nice guy who loved his family even though they weren’t great and depended on him way too much. For money, for taking care of their house, for food. Pretty much everything. But in the great conflict between Nash and Mason near the end, it’s shown that Mason is an enabler. He may not break the law himself like his brothers, but he’s demanding Nash break it in order to help his brother who broke it, in order to keep the family together. Then Mason gets furious at Nash because Nash won’t break the law. Mason never admits to himself, or Nash, that he’s an enabler in the story. He only apologizes for being upset and he never really wanted Nash to break the law. Actually, Mason did. I ended up losing interest and respect for Mason because he wouldn’t admit he was an enabler, and lied about not really wanting Nash to break the law. Mason liked to blame Nash for keeping them secret and not wanting to talk about Mason to Nash’s family, but Mason was no better, not wanting to discuss his family with Nash. Nash was upfront, but Mason was hypocritical and wouldn’t admit he was. I ended up not liking Mason as much by the end of the story after the huge conflict. They did work things out between them, even though it was Nash who changed the most. Mason didn’t really change; he just took on a different responsibility. I could believe in these two as a couple because they worked hard for their HEA.

Overall, I found the slow progress of Nash and Mason’s relationship realistic because they both had huge issues to resolve with each other and their families. However, I think it may have been slightly too slow, because by about three-fourths of the way through the book, I was putting it down frequently to do other things. I still enjoyed the story and will likely read the next books in the series. I give Trust with a Chaser, 4 Stars.
