The title Be Kind by Pat Zietlow Miller gives away the book's theme: kindness. The story follows a young girl who witnesses a fellow classmate have an accident and be mocked by their classmates. She questions herself about what she can do to be kind. She is tempted to mock her, but remembers her mother’s words. This begins her journey to show kindness to her classmate, Tanisha. She decides to draw her flowers in her favorite color, purple. Tanisha does not seem to respond to the gift in the manner the young girl hoped she would. The young girl then details all the ways she is kind and sees acts of kindness in her life. The importance of being kind is repeated throughout the story. The story describes examples of how to be kind. The author reminds the reader when people see acts of kindness they will be inspired to spread kindness to others. Parents could use this book as a platform to teach their children about how kindness is an act that is given without expecting a reward. Children will learn that people are kind to make others feel better. The ending shows that being kind is always the right thing to do with Tanisha accepting the young girl’s act of kindness. ( )

This book surrounds the topic of being kind. A young girl talks about what it means to be kind to one another and how she is being kind to her peers. This would be a great book for children who are learning about friendship and kindness. The captivating illustrations would also be engaging to younger audiences. ( )

This book is all about being kind. After a little girl accidentally spills grape juice on herself, her classmates ponders the question of how to be kind. She says her mom tells her to always be kind and you can be kind through different actions such as standing up for others, giving, greeting, and more. At the end of the book she discusses how small acts of kindness are important because they will create a big wave of kindness that can reach everyone. This would be great for primary readers.
