Excellent. Definitely dark in places, but hilarious in others.

Elizabeth has always seen and been able to interpret auras, but her early experiences and her father's advice have cautioned her not only to keep that secret, but to mute it. Then she senses the her husband's boss is too interested in her - for her abilities. Her nightmare, or perhaps nightmares begins. The story moves well, but at the end leaves the impression that it wasn't all that well put together. And the action scenes are full of annoying repetitions. ( )

As long as she can remember, Elizabeth Cage has been able to see auras or color emanations ebbing and flowing around people. From these auras, she can discern the person's character, what they know, and their truthfulness. What government would not give to use such gifts. Cage learns how much when her husband who Director of Security of Security for a plush psychiatric clinic dies suddently from an apparent heart attack and she finds herself committed to the facility by the director, Dr. Sorenson, who advises governments in psychological warfare. Cage doesn't know what he has planned for her, but she knows she needs to escape before she finds out.

Having read and enjoyed the author's Chronicles of St. Mary's time travel series, I thought I would give this a try. Like the former, this book of the Elizabeth Cage series includes several adventures. This one even involves a short time travel trip but, in this case, aided by a ghost rather than a machine. Cage's character seems to be more insecure than the protagonist of the former series; however, I'm sure she will grow as the series continue. While each story in the fomer series are more standalone, the inaugural book in the current series seemed to be a "to-be-continued" in the subsequent novel. If you are a fan of St. Mary's series, you might consider picking up this series up. ( )

I can honestly say that Jodi Taylor is awesome. :)

I've been rocking hard to her St. Mary's series and truly had no trepidation when it came to seeing her try her hand with something different, and that faith has been repaid a hundredfold.

Do you like paranormal thrillers? Do you like aura reading and a whole bunch of goodies that might come when you least expect it? How about very normal MC's with a secret, a holding back, an edge of the precipice kind of thing?

I love this stuff. It's atmospheric and gentle and dedicated to getting character and tension right, but more than that, it's humorous, genuine, and rather interestingly diverse when you consider where it begins.

And then there are the surprises. The laugh out loud or evil extended laugh kind. There's the genuine desire for revenge, the budding love, the betrayals, the hope.

And above all, there's the ever-abiding desire for more.

This can't be all there is. I won't allow it. :) I'm Caged. I need more. :)

For everyone else who may or may not be on the fence, just think about the best feels from Odd Thomas for all you Koontz fans. If that isn't enough, then I don't know what is. :)

I bought"White Silence" as soon as it came out last month because it has a beautiful cover, is written by Jodi Taylor, whose "St. Mary's" series has given me a great deal of pleasure and is described by the publisher as:

The first instalment in the new, gripping supernatural thriller series
and as:
"a twisty supernatural thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat"

Well, I'm twelve chapters and four hours into this ten-hour audiobook and I have yet to experience anything like tension. I'm having difficulty maintaining more than mild curiosity so I'm giving up and reluctantly adding "White Silence" to my Did Not Finish pile.

The premise of "White Silence" is intriguing. It tells the story of Elizabeth Cage, an adopted child with the ability to see people so clearly that she knows their character, intent and inclinations on sight. Trained from childhood to hide her powers, she seeks out a quiet life with a quiet man, only to be manoeuvred into the hands of unscrupulous people who want to use her powers for evil.

Sounds like stirring stuff in a sort of Superman meets Sixth Sense meets Medium kind of way. Except it isn't. The pace is agonisingly slow. Elizabeth Cage has so little personality that I struggled to care what happened to her and the England of the story seems to be trapped somewhere in an idealised 1950s.

Maybe all the good stuff happens in the last 60% of the book and I'm missing out by walking away but life is short and other books are calling to me, so I'll take that chance. ( )
