This is a pretty good collection of short stories. The characters are mainly middle class GenXers, but that's okay. They're also not drawn terribly sympathetically, for the most part--not villainous, but also very much imperfect. "The Prairie Wife" is the standout of the bunch; read it carefully. ( )

After having thoroughly enjoyed Sittenfeld's [b:Eligible|25852870|Eligible (The Austen Project, #4)|Curtis Sittenfeld|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1460477855l/25852870._SY75_.jpg|26428236], I decided to try this collection of short stories. Each story was engaging. The characters were developed enough to allow the reader to sympathize and understand the dilemmas they were facing. Sittenfeld is an expert at describing relationships. It is amazing that she can convey so much in so few words. ( )

Wow. Really solid collection. Excellent writing and full of deep feelings.
Some wonderful writing about people misinterpreting and misunderstanding each other. ( )

An enjoyable collection of stories that entertain and also haunt to some extent because the author ends on a note of ambiguity. What's the takeaway? It's often left to the reader. There is definitely the prep school angst in a couple stories (Vox Clamantis in Deserto, Do-Over) and insecurity in relationships (A Regular Couple, A Prairie Wife, Plausible Deniability) The title of the collection appears in the story The World Has Many Butterflies. Suburban mom Julie is at a suburban event and ends of next to suburban Dad Graham who challenges her: "I'll think it, you say it" which becomes a party game of ruthlessly secretly bashing the other suburban parents present. This creates intimacy for Julie who reads it all wrong -- Graham wants out of his marriage, but not to be with her. Many of these stories operate on the same kind of social miscues, or ineptness in some cases and while it is liberating to expose them, it is a little squirmy to read them. ( )

You Think It, I’ll Say It confirms to me that Curtis Sittenfeld is a genius. She is an absolutely brilliant writer and I am now a slavish devotee to anything she writes. Short stories aren’t always my jam, but these are the best mango jam (my favourite) out there.

This book contains eleven short stories that are all wonderful. They grab the reader right from the start and pull you in to a fully formed world of characters, setting and plot. I didn’t want any of them to end. Any of these could be a full novel. (In fact, if you’ve read Rodham, you could consider the first story to be a kind of bonus as it is about a female Presidential nominee). The stories all have a theme, of misunderstanding another person’s intent and putting your own spin on others. But the theme isn’t forefront, you can simply enjoy these well-crafted stories for what they are. They are diverse in range, from the couple on honeymoon meeting up with a high school nemesis, to the Insta-famous ‘prairie wife’ and the secrets of her past. There are odd characters who can’t read a room and those who are ready to leave their lives for a relationship that only exists in their head. The characters are at times uncomfortable, perhaps because the reader can recognise their mistakes (and see it in themselves). Sometimes it’s just deliciously voyeuristic to see others get caught up in awkward situations and make bad judgements.

This collection can’t do anything wrong. It is entertaining, thought provoking and brilliantly written. Not only is Sittenfeld the master of great novels, she’s written the guidebook on great short story collections.
