Don’t read the 2nd & 3rd DNF at 25% Advance copy provided by Netgalley I just didn’t like Rielle or Eliana, and I wasn’t invested in their stories. I was also confused by the world. I’m a fantasy veteran, and I know high fantasy can take extra effort in terms of learning a new world, but the world building here felt like a throw-everything-at-the-reader-at-once approach. Since I didn’t care about the characters, I didn’t have a lot of motivation to sort through it all. This was one of my most anticipated reads of 2018, and it's also one of my favorites of the year! Furyborn contains two points of view: two girls thousands of years apart, connected by a prophecy promising a Blood Queen and a Sun Queen Rielle, the Blood Queen, was such a conflicted, complicated character I loved reading about. Although as the Blood Queen she is seen as the "evil" queen, she is so kindhearted and just wants to protect her best friend and the man she loves. Eliana, the Sun Queen, reminded me of Celaena Sardothien from Throne of Glass. She's an assassin, and she initially seems coldhearted and brutal, but as her storyline and her past become more clear, it's obvious that she just wants to survive and be happy with her family. I also really loved two of the side characters, Ludivine and Simon. The writing style was absolutely beautiful and the way the author wove together the two storylines was so impressive. When assassins ambush her best friend, Rielle Dardenne risks everything to save him, exposing herself as one of a pair of prophesied queens: a queen of light, and a queen of blood. To prove she is the Sun Queen, Rielle must endure seven elemental magic trials. If she fails, she will be executed...unless the trials kill her first. One thousand years later, the legend of Queen Rielle is a fairy tale to Eliana Ferracora. A bounty hunter for the Undying Empire, Eliana believes herself untouchable--until her mother vanishes. To find her, Eliana joins a rebel captain and discovers that the evil at the empire's heart is more terrible than she ever imagined. As Rielle and Eliana fight in a cosmic war that spans millennia, their stories intersect, and the shocking connections between them ultimately determine the fate of their world--and of each other.
