Blue Beetle (2016-) #1 - Keith Giffen, Jr., Romulo Fajardo, Scott Kolins
Another series I'm loving. Blue Beetle starts off with an action packed episode. I didn't really put together that the previous issue was the Rebirth. It's not something that I look inside, at the teeny tiny print for, and since both say Rebirth and are technically issues one - and thus have the numeral 1 on the cover - it's not the easiest thing in the world to tell. (And let's not get into variant covers, which can be even more confusing, and which meant when I was looking at the buy get the third free at Newbury, I was peeking inside to see if I was getting the right issue one for Suicide Squad.)
That being said, love, love, love Blue Beetle. It reminds me a lot of a lighter Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with a teen having a secret identity and the snark and quips from Jaime's friends. There's also a made family: Jaime, his billionaire benefactor and his friends are a made family that watch each others backs, tied together by the secret that Jaime is the Blue Beetle.
No vampires, lighter on the metaphors and angst, but there are enough similarities to keep me reading. I liked Buffy a lot for the fact that everyone tended to work together, even when sniping at each other, and what it said about pulling together as a found family. It's really that which intrigues me most in this series, although the fact that it's genuinely funny helps its cause.
I'll continue reading, at least for now. I may have to drop some series as I'm getting a little overwhelmed with the titles, so we shall see what happens in the future. I refuse to drop most of my Marvel titles, or the Transformers titles*, and that leaves the three DC titles - Suicide Squad, Blue Beetle and Batman.
*Barber's post RiD title is called Optimus Prime and focuses on, well, Optimus Prime. Optimus is not my favorite TF character, so I may end up dropping that.
