Lani Pope is a wonderful water rescue worker (lifeguard) but coming from a family of cops her dreams have always been to be a police officer herself. Sadly, while not on the force, she has developed a habit of discovering crimes and having bodies wash up at her feet. Her latest discovery has ties to a closed case her father investigated before he retired. Everyone thought this man was dead years ago. Why did his body wash up now?
Lani is used to her brothers trying to keep her out of investigations but this one hits too close to home after her brother Jason is shot. When the J-team, her brothers, also keep their father from being part of this case, Lani sees an opportunity to work alongside her dad. If they can solve the mystery and show up her brothers, that wouldn't be so bad either.
Meanwhile, Lani's lovelife is on hiatus while her boyfriend is off island in Texas with his family while his own father recovers from an injury. With the time difference and each needing to be at hospitals with family, this long distance relationship is tested.
Emotions run high in this installment of the Sand and Sea Hawaiian mysteries.
There are parrallells in Lani's and Luke's family situations. Kekoa makes Lani see that maybe her dream of becoming a cop isn't perfect. Perhaps she should take another look at it and adjust her goal. Lani learns to appreciate her mother as the one who waits on the sidelines and holds the family together while perhaps Lani's brothers begin to appreciate their little sister's skills. A lot of fresh perspectives are shared. ( )
