She was in the wrong place... Fiercely independent and adventurous, Poppy Bridgerton will only wed a suitor whose keen intellect and interests match her own. Sadly, none of the fools from her London season qualify. While visiting a friend on the Dorset coast, Poppy is pleasantly surprised to discover a smugglers' hideaway tucked inside a cave. But her delight turns to dismay when two pirates kidnap her and take her aboard a ship, leaving her bound and gagged on the captain's bed... He found her at the wrong time... Known to society as a rascal and reckless privateer, Captain Andrew James Rokesby actually transports essential goods and documents for the British government. Setting sail on a time-sensitive voyage to Portugal, he's stunned to find a woman waiting for him in his cabin. Surely, his imagination is getting the better of him. But no, she is very real--and his duty to the Crown means he's stuck with her.  Can two wrongs make the most perfect right?  When Andrew learns that she is a Bridgerton, he knows he will likely have to wed her to avert a scandal--though Poppy has no idea that he is the son of an earl and neighbor to her aristocratic cousins in Kent. On the high seas, their war of words soon gives way to an intoxicating passion. But when Andrew's secret is revealed, will his declaration of love be enough to capture her heart...'… (més)

I continue to be delighted with this series, and with the strikingly amusing and witty dialogue that so many of the Bridgerton and Rokesby fmaily members possess. I enjoyed Poppy's pragmatism, Andrew's cheeky rejoinders, and the laugh-out-loud moments scattered through this adventure on the high seas.

4.5 stars rounded up. My impression of this couple in their first interaction was that they were going to be cliche characters that I've just read over and over again and don't especially care for, but actually they ended up being unique and interesting and I liked them both! I love how she was so curious wanting to better understand the world around her, and that he always paid attention to, encouraged, and genuinely appreciated that about her! The story really focused on them, with a minimum of side character antics and distractions. And their feelings developed in a natural way. I think they're very well suited. ( )

Poppy Bridgerton is visiting her pregnant friend, Elizabeth, after Poppy's second disappointing London season. While exploring a seaside cave on her own she accidentally stumbles across a privateer's stash and ends up being taken aboard the ship by two of the crewmembers. Unbeknownst to Poppy the Captain is not just a privateer but also an information courier for the government and the third son of the Earl of Rokesby. Andrew knows that he has no choice but to take Poppy along on his brief trip to Portugal to protect time-sensitive information but he's just as irritated by the situation as she is. However, spending time in close quarters proves that Andrew's unexpected travel companion may just be the woman he wants to spend the rest of his life with.

A charming romance in the Bridgertons prequel series. Poppy is an intelligent and charming character and her witty dialogue with Andrew is a delight. I also really appreciated how Quinn set up the novel so that all the intimacy only occurred when the power imbalance inherent in Poppy essentially being kidnapped is no longer in effect. The cast in this novel is pretty small and it really allows for the novel to dig into who these characters are, which makes the happy ending even more enjoyable. Recommended for historical romance fans. ( )

I wasn't a huge fan of the "kidnapped by pirates" plot, but I did laugh at this bit:

"I really really love the soup," she cried out. "But I also hate it so much." ( )

For a young woman who had grown up on an island, in Somerset to be precise, Poppy Bridgerton had spent remarkably little time at the coast.
