What if Mulan had to travel to the Underworld? When Captain Shang is mortally wounded by Shan Yu in battle, Mulan must travel to the Underworld, Diyu, in order to save him from certain death. But King Yama, the ruler of Diyu, is not willing to give Shang up easily. With the help of Shang's great lion guardian ShiShi, Mulan must traverse Diyu to find Shang's spirit, face harrowing obstacles, and leave by sunrise--or become King Yama's prisoner forever. Moreover, Mulan is still disguised as the soldier called Ping, wrestling with the decision to reveal her true identity to her closest friend. Will Mulan be able to save Shang before it's too late? Will he ever be able to trust her again? Or will she lose him--and be lost in the Underworld--forever?… (més)

The story begins on the mountain where Mulan singlehandedly wipes out the Hun army with an avalanche — but Captain Li Shang is mortally wounded in the process. To save Shang from death, Mulan must venture into the underworld, Diyu, and convince King Yama to allow Shang’s spirit to return to the land of the living. Rising to the challenge King Yama sets her, Mulan must traverse the many dangers of Diyu, outrun hordes of demons, and continue to keep her identity a secret from Shang … or reveal the truth and risk the trust and friendship they have built.

This one is up there with my favourites in this series! There’s a lot of action-heavy scenes (which admittedly are not my jam) interspersed with more reflective and character-driven scenes (which I loved!) And I learned a lot about Chinese underworld mythology! ( )

This is by far my most favorite twisted tale so far. This is nothing like the movie and so creative that I don't think anyone could have made it better. I loved how Elizabeth took this story to a whole new adventure one in the underworld/spirit world. This book was truly a twist in the story and took a different perspective within it. Definitely will read more than once and recommend everyone to read this. ( )

For the longest time I’ve been debating whether or not to read the Twisted Tales from Disney. Typically, I’ll read any Disney related book, but the first two books in the series got such mixed reviews, that it deterred me from picking one up. Then the Beauty and the Beast one and this one came out and they got better reviews. So I finally decided to try one out. I’m so glad I did because this was really good!

First off, I was really happy that Disney choose a Asian author to write this book. I think #OwnVoices literature is so important. You can tell that the author knew the culture so well. She did a great job incorporating the Chinese underworld and mythology into the story.

I also have to give the author major props for doing her homework. It was very clear that she watched the direct-to-DVD Mulan 2 movie. There was one part where Shang says, “Perhaps when I marry, I’ll combine the ancestral temples so my bride won’t have to leave her family” (175). That is exactly what ends up happening in Mulan 2. When I read that line, I immediately remembered that part in the movie.

Since the book starts during the battle against the huns on the mountain, I was happy that it still referenced earlier events in the movie. They were woven into the story nicely.

Overall, I just think the whole book was so well done. From the writing style to the incorporation of mirrors and reflections, it hit all the checkboxes. ( )

Part of a YA series, this retelling is the best one so far. All the books have had potential, but this one unfolds quicker than its predecessors. A Mulan adaptation that includes hints of Dante's Inferno (Divine Comedy), classic Greek stories, and fused with Chinese culture. The story flows well and after the first couple of chapters (which follow the Disney animated film closely), the pace is steady. This one has convinced me to keep reading the series. For Disney fans and readers who enjoy adaptations.
