Tirza (2006)

I think this is the first Dutch novel I have read. And what a read.

Our protagonist is Jorgen Hofmeester, a man coming close to 60 years of age, living with daughter Tirza. His wife has recently returned after walking out three years previously. His older daughter is away in college.

Tirza is the name of the book because she is the focus of Hofmeester's attention. He lauds her in public, always calling her "brilliant, brilliant". But at the heart of his love for Tirza is his love for himself.

It is hard to like Hofmeester. He obsesses on wrongs done to him while cookikng up ways to spin his own shortcomings. I had to feel some sympathy for him when his wife first spoke, though. She has her own protective defenses down pat, and skewering him comes first. The only one who seems to be genuine in her love is Tirza, and is she really?

The book is funny in its tragic way, but it made my stomach turn because of Hofmeester's innate tendencies to do the wrong thing. It drew me in regardless, and I was completely unprepared for the ending.

Gruwelijk prachtig. Stevige plot. Straf verhaal en toch geloofwaardig, vanwege de meesterlijke karakterschets van de hoofdfiguur. ( )

Dit was een verrassing! Ik had Grunberg eigenlijk al opgegeven: zijn nihilistisch oeuvre botste frontaal met mijn (misschien naïeve) existentialistische ingesteldheid; ook literair-stilistisch sprak hij mij niet aan. Maar Tirza is anders! Het is te zeggen: de wereld die Grunberg ons hier toont is even grauw en uitzichtloos als in zijn andere boeken, maar literair is dit gewoonweg spetterend. De manier waarop hij hoofdfiguur Jörgen Hofmeester tekent is meesterlijk, hoe gruwelijk dit burgermannetje uiteindelijk ook blijkt te zijn. De omgang met zijn echtgenote, die na 3 jaar plots weer aan de voordeur staat, deed me denken aan de intensiteit van “Who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf” van Edward Albee, heerlijk gewoon. De laatste hoofdstukken in Namibië, op reis met een 9-jarig zwart meisje, brachten wel heel erg Nabokov’s “Lolita” in herinnering, en de geleidelijk altijd maar intensere toestand van verdwazing en trance leken me dan weer een mooie referentie aan Raskolnikov in “Misdaad en Straf” van Dostojevski. Ik weet het, geen klein bier waar Grunberg zich mee meet. En akkoord, er zijn misschien wel enkele zwakkere punten, zoals de fletse figuur van Tirza zelf, of de ongeloofwaardige metamorfose van de echtgenote (van bitsig naar aanhankelijk), en ook de beslissende draai in de plot is niet helemaal onverwacht. Maar ik vind wel dat Grunberg een echt geslaagd, grotesk boek heeft afgeleverd. ( )

Tirza is a Dutch novel which completely pulls the reader into the weirdly autistic world of its main protagonist, Jörgen Hofmeester. Hofmeester cannot accept that his daughter is growing up, and cannot live with reality as it is. While the plot is very thin, consisting of little more than the complications between Hofmeester and his wife, who shows up after three years of absence, and the birthday of his daughter, in whose Moroccan boyfriend Hofmeester seems to recognize Mohammed Atta, the claustrophobic paranoia of the novel seems a completely natural biosphere for this weird story to unfold. The reader is completely drawn in, and despite its length the book continues to fascinate till the very end. Very well done. ( )
