Facing conflicts in who she is between discovering herself at school as a poet and the expectations in the home of her devout Catholic, Dominican mother, this book is Xiomara's journey of reconciling the many parts of her life. Acevedo wrote this in response to her students' frustrations that they didn't see themselves reflected on the pages of books. The result is this compelling, heartfelt, and immensely relatable book.
