Four self-contained magical crimes, ripped from the streets of supernatural London! From the million-selling Rivers of London novel and graphic novel series by writer Ben Aaronovitch comes this unmissable next chapter in the saga, as PC Peter Grant faces his grueling Detective exam, forcing him to relieve the strangest cases of his career. From foiling an aspiring god, to confronting a Virtual Flasher, Peter's police history has been anything but conventional; whether that's chasing down 'Falcon' crimes with the aid of modern technology, or confronting timeless villainy with his magical skill-set. Good stuff as always. Could have done with more Nightingale, but this was still an enjoyable collection. ( )

Yep, still really love this series. I particularly enjoy the graphic novel stories because they don't necessarily tie into the larger plot, but instead give us the day to day challenges and puzzles of a magic police procedural. ( )

I always like seeing what Peter does in his time between novels, especially when it’s the smaller cases. It’s fun seeing the trouble he gets up to and his way of solving the case, especially with his commentary, and you get all the excitement of a mystery without so much of the legwork.

This volume’s no exception. There are some nice callbacks to and cameos from the novels, and draw on established lore in new ways. You get to see bits of the world and characters’ lives that don’t pop up in the novels too, Aaronovitch playing with possibilities and maybe doing a bit of fan service at the same time. (Not that kind, though!) I also enjoyed the historical notes that “Peter” threw in at the start or end of the chapters.

Beyond that, there’s not a whole lot I can say. Aaronovitch’s quality’s about the same—though I believe he’s stronger on short form stuff these days—and the art’s about the same as well. The stories are fun, but also pretty standard for the setting. I think he’s setting some stuff up for the next novel or possibly just the next volume of the comics, but until I read that, I’m not sure.

Recced to fans of the series/universe but not to newbies. There’s not quite enough explanation of world or characters to truly understand some context stuff, if you’re not coming from the previous books or comics.

Warnings: Goat death. One panel with injuries like slit wrists but unrelated to suicide.

This latest collection is a string of one shots that are connected by the fact it is Peter going over some of his old cases as he is being reviewed for promotion. None of the stories are connected and in fact one doesn’t have any magic in it since it was about one of the first cases he worked before he even met his first ghost and became part of the Folly. There were not any one-page comics in this collection and I’m a bit bummed by that. What I liked about this collection is the reader didn’t have to be completely caught up on all the books to enjoy it. ( )

The Rivers of London/Peter Grant is one of my favorite ongoing series and one of the things I like about it is the many different ways the stories are being told (novels, shorts, comics and there is also a free audio-exclusive). Also, it is British.

Detective stories includes four short stories of Peter's Falcon cases as he recalls them while being interviewed for a detective exam. I liked them a lot as they make the wait for the next novel more bearable. ( )
