Eight Nights in December is the story of Lucas, who’s invited to his roommate’s home for the holidays, and Nate, the younger brother of Lucas’s roommate, Sam. This is told in third person from Lucas’ pov.

I enjoyed this story. The author did a good job of creating a holiday atmosphere around Hanukkah, showing the interactions and personalities of all the characters, and provided a steady pace to the growing relationship between Lucas and Nate.

Here’s a little background of the plot. Lucas is invited to spend the holidays with his roommate Sam’s, family. Lucas is to room with Sam’s younger brother Nate, a photographer. Since we are only seeing everything from Lucas’s pov, we aren’t sure if Nate is gay, but hints are given and Nate eventually makes it clear that he is. Lucas is a virgin and eager to get to know Nate, who isn’t looking for a boyfriend, but is eager to have some fun over the Hanukkah holidays and to teach Lucas about sex. The conflict in this relationship comes with Nate not being out to his family and that he only wants a fling with Lucas. As they spend time together their relationship starts to change. The author did a good job of gradually showing the changes Nate and Lucas went through.

Lucas has a shy personality and doesn’t think much of himself. He’s not skilled at small talk. Nate on the other hand appears shy and a loner when he first appears on page. But once he knows Luke is gay and they get together, it’s a totally different Nate. Nate is not interested in a relationship and made that clear from the beginning. At first, I didn’t like Nate, he didn’t seem good enough for Lucas. Partly because Lucas was willing to pretend to himself that he was willing to take what he could get from Nate and then go on with his life, when that’s not really what he wanted. And Nate for all his knowledge about sex and living the gay life in hiding from his family, he wasn’t courageous or authentic. The one thing similar between the two men, is they were both majoring in subjects they didn’t want to be in. Besides romance, the story’s theme was also about changing course and pursuing your true dreams, not dreams created by someone else.

The writing was smooth and easy to follow. It kept up a steady pace with no noticeable slowing, at least to me. I’m not familiar with Hanukkah so I can’t say if the traditions written about are correct or not.

Even though this isn’t a Christmas story, which is what I usually read, I enjoyed this. The book has a definite holiday feel, with good characterizations, character growth, and a HEA. I’d recommend this book to anyone looking for a holiday read. I give Eight Nights in December, 4 Stars.

Really enjoyed this. Lucas is going to be spending his holidays alone until his college roommate's mother says absolutely not. While there, Lucas meets his roommate's brother, and there are definite sparks. Nate says he doesn't want a boyfriend, but spending 8 days in December with Lucas makes him rethink that. They are adorable together, and are able to read each other well. They support each other during difficult/upsetting times, and develop well on page. ( )
