"From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of In a Dark, Dark Wood, The Woman in Cabin 10, and The Lying Game comes Ruth Ware's highly anticipated fourth novel. On a day that begins like any other, Hal receives a mysterious letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She realizes very quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong person--but also that the cold-reading skills she's honed as a tarot card reader might help her claim the money. Soon, Hal finds herself at the funeral of the deceased...where it dawns on her that there is something very, very wrong about this strange situation and the inheritance at the center of it. Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Ware's signature suspenseful style, this is an unputdownable thriller from the Agatha Christie of our time"--… (més)

When I picked this up, I thought that it was a classic whodunnit so I was a bit uncertain of what was going on to start with. This was no bad thing as it contributed to the unsettling vibe created by the book.

By about half way through, I had worked out a few key parts of the mystery. But even after I'd finished the book, I still struggled to understand exactly what had gone on and who had done what! I think that there were too many loose ends - the author doesn't need to explain everything in minute detail, but there were really too many unexplained points for my taste (a view with which my book club concurred).

I also really struggled with the behaviour of some characters, as I found their actions towards the end of the story to be largely inconsistent with the way that they had been characterised earlier in the book.

I did really enjoy the author's descriptions of the different locations - particularly Hal's flat, the pier and the estate.

Overall, I enjoyed the book. ( )

Hal receives word that her grandmother, Hester Westaway, has passed away and she is named in the will. Hal knows that there has been some sort of mistake and that she is not the person they are looking for. Only thing is that Hal is in desperate need of some funds to get a scary loan shark off her back, so she decides to go for it and see what she can get from this will. Only things are so much more complicated than she ever could have imagined and she discovers that she does have some kind of link to this family after all. Some parts I figured out pretty early on but not everything. All in all I really enjoyed it and read through it super fast! I would give this a 3.5. ( )

I'm in a cycle where I seem to be reading about toxic families living in old houses. I enjoyed this book a lot but I think it took a little too long to get going, i.e. get to the house and the toxic family, and occasionally got a little bogged down. But overall I found it a great story with lots of twists, turns, and unexpected but logical surprises. There is an interview with the author at the end of the book and she mentions that Daphne du Maurier and Patricia Highsmith and that is good company to play in. I found our narrator to be engaging and I was rooting for her even when she was not doing the "right thing." ( )

What a great diversion during a difficult time. There is nothing like an old fashioned British drawing room like mystery to take you away ( )

Decent. Better than In A Dark Dark Wood, which was truly ridiculous. Still a bit of an annoying main character. ( )
