After reading Mary Janice Davidson’s Queen Betsy series, I was interested in some of her other work. I picked up Adventures of the Teen Furies expecting another supernatural tale with a snarky, semi-annoying heroine. I was right about the latter, but not the former. This is more of a YA title, in which a group of friends get together and play a Live Action Role Playing Game known as Villains and Vigilantes. They each make up characters, and some parts of the book are told as if they are actual super-heroes fighting against each other. Along with the super-powered bits, the members of the teenage cast also have interesting character traits and issues to deal with. One is struggling with depression, one has an alcoholic grandmother, one is trying to decide whether to have sex with her boyfriend, etc. They also pair off with each other and some romantic drama ensues.
While not quite as fascinating as the Queen Betsy books, this was still engaging and diverting. It was a quick read and kept my interest throughout. Probably better suited for the YA audience it was written for, however, as they have more patience for High School drama. ( )
