This is NOT light fluffy summer reading. Ooof. But it's so good. ( )

This started out as a good, fantasy/fish out of water boarding school book and then about halfway through got real dark and real brutal. Plot and characterization clicked along nicely though, so just be warned. ( )

Unpopular opinion, apparently. The writing is awful. The narrative just skips and skims over time, action and events primarily told via the most bland infodumping that completely disconnects the readers from the characters. All the intriguing commentary in the beginning on social classes and the test being a placating ruse pretending equality just falls away for extremely weird school dynamics where the main character, despite all odds, is *different* from all the other students and gets into petty rivalries based on nothing new or compelling.

And that fly-by scene of the main character deciding to make herself permanently sterile with no thought or consideration whatsoever felt so gross and wrong. To be clear, I agree that people should be able to make a decision either way (to have children or not to have children, both equally valid). But it's a big one that needs to be thought through, not decided immediately based on a tangential effect (not having a period, which again I can very much support) in a scene that makes it sound like not a big deal at all. The Poppy War is the first book in a sort of alternate history fantasy set in eastern Asia and inspired by real historical (and horrific) events. We mostly follow a girl named Rin. It starts out in a fairly typical epic fantasy fashion, but it’s written well and I was completely absorbed. Rin is an orphan, and her adoptive parents are essentially drug dealers who are not kind to her. They plan to marry her off to a man she doesn’t want to marry in exchange for benefits to their own business. She manages to get accepted into a military academy which allows her to escape that fate, but she has a new set of challenges to face there. Meanwhile, war is brewing with another nation and she and her classmates might have to put their training to the test sooner than expected.

I was invested in Rin and her success in the first half of the book, despite not always agreeing with her choices. I’m not sure her successes were fully believable considering her challenges and the amount of time she had to overcome them, but I was able to suspend my disbelief. There were a couple other characters I also liked, especially Jiang. He was hilarious. The pig carrying scenes also cracked me up. There isn’t much magic in this earlier part of the book, but there were intriguing hints that started to become clearer in time to be used more heavily later in the book.

The second half was much darker, with bad situations and bad decisions and messed up people and very graphic descriptions of the horrible things humans can do to other humans. The violence was too much for me at times, and all the more horrific in that it was based on real historical events. This was also the point in the story where I started to get frustrated with Rin. I started to realize I had no idea what she was going to do, because I found her reactions and choices difficult to understand and therefore unpredictable, but in a frustrating way rather than in a fun, twisty way. I couldn’t decide if I found her confusing and frustrating because she was a realistic character with multiple layers and a tendency to be overly swayed by her emotions at any given moment, or if I found her confusing and frustrating because the author didn’t write her consistently or convey her motivations clearly. I think it was probably the former, but sometimes I felt like it was the latter. I also frequently found myself wondering if Rin was being set up to be the main villain in the remainder of the series. I occasionally had flashbacks to another series I read many years ago in which the first book presented the reader with a sympathetic main character, a young girl, and then showed us how she became a horrible person of pure evil. I don’t think that’s being done here, but there were definitely times when I wondered!

I wasn’t sure how I felt about some of the events at the end of the story or how the story was left, but I did mostly enjoy reading this, enough to give it 4 stars and continue on to the next book. I’m very curious to see where it goes next. I’m especially curious to learn more about Jiang and see what he does (or doesn’t do) next. I expect that Nezha is still alive and look forward to seeing what role he’ll play and learning more about him and the special abilities it was hinted that he has. ( )
