Captain Roystan is a cargo runner who has stumbled across the find of a lifetime: a disabled exploration ship and its valuable contents. His engineer, Josune Arriola, said her last assignment was in uncharted rim. But she is decked out in high-level bioware that belies her backstory. A body-modification artist, Nika Rik has run afoul of clients. She has to flee off-world, and is dragging along a rookie modder, who seems too experienced in weapons and war. Together this mismatched crew will end up on one ship, hurtling through the lawless reaches of deep space in search of unimaginable riches.… (més)

What a great fun read. Couldn't put it down. Likeable characters, lots of action, surprises and twists, nicely written. Already picked up book 2. ( )

A space opera about a ragtag band of big damn heroes, brought together by fate, personal goals, past mistakes and a general wish to be one step ahead of those who follow them. Also, there might be some treasure-hunting adventure into unknown regions of space involved.

What's not to love?

This is character-driven space opera at its best and if you enjoy those stories, I highly recommend you read this book. Or listen to the audiobook, because that is great as well.

The two POV characters quickly grew on me, as did the others. I liked how everyone had something to hide, how everyone mistrusted everyone and how the trust and friendships between all of the characters developed, it felt very natural and not forced. Thoughts and motivations of each character were believable, which is something I appreciate. The story is fast-paced and there was a lot of really good action, it never reverted to the classic (read: overused) space-opera/sci-fi action tropes you find in every other story.
I enjoyed the worldbuilding and especially the pseudoscience of body modification, it's perfect space opera science. Fans of hard sci-fi will probably have a few things to complain about, so be warned.

The writing is great, the authors nail character voice and development as well as subtle interactions and great action scenes. They let you experience this world in all its details, which I appreciate a lot, without simply telling about it. This is why I have to compare this book to 'The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet': I loved the worldbuilding in the latter, but couldn't finish it because it was all tell, don't show. 'Stars Uncharted' shows you its world, and it's equally fascinating.

Also, how beautiful is this cover?

This is the best book I read in 2019.
Unmistakenly of my favourite genre and at the same time presents ideas and worldbuilding I haven't read before.

I took one half star off for:
- I did not need the developing romance between Josune and Roystan, to me, them being friends felt much more natural and a fast, deep friendship would have served their motivations in the story in the same way. This way, it seems like an editor told the authors there was too little romance in the story. But since it's not the focus of their relationship and it develops slowly, it's not that distracting. And, who knows, maybe it is building up to something more which we will read about in a later book.
- I hope the companies and their employees will be painted in a more grey light in the future. In this book, they are pure evil. That's okay, because we got to know our main characters in this book. In future books I hope to see more morally diverse characters working for the companies. ( )

There is a lot going on in this sci-fi romp -- body modifications and exchanging, evil and greedy corporations, space exploration, and just lots of action-packed adventure. It's a space adventure that gave me a Firefly-type fix, with more intrigue and genetic modifications added into the mix. Sometimes I just need an entertaining adventure in space to make me happy. This book put a smile on my face. :) See?

For the first third of this book the story dealt mainly with genetic modifications and body exchanges. While that is interesting and I like the Nika (the body modder) as a character, the story moved a bit too slowly for me at first. But, once the action got started, I was so hooked on this story. It definitely kept my attention. The character development and the world is just so richly creative. This was definitely fun to read!

This sci-fi story is well-written, engaging and incredibly creative. I like it when I find a story that is different and new....this isn't just a recycled sci-fi plot with tired trope-y characters. Nicely done!

The cover art is gorgeous!!

S.K. Dunstall also write the Linesman series. I liked this book, so I'm definitely going to read her other series!

I really enjoyed this adventure space opera. I had read Dunstall's Linesman books and thought they were okay, but I loved the world-building and the characters in this one much more. Yes, there are no hidden depths, but there is a lot of pure entertainment in the adventure. Recommended! ( )

Nika Rik Terri, well-known body modder, runs into trouble when someone from a powerful company forces her to use her body exchanger, using her body to commit murder while she heals his body. She was planning to leave her abusive boyfriend anyway, but this just gives her a stronger reason to disappear. Meanwhile, Josune Arriola has left her ship for a special mission: stay close to captain Hammond Roystan. When her ship nullspaces right in front of them and they find the crew murdered by a company, the stakes suddenly get high. Can the crew outrun the company in a universe where the Big Twenty-Seven even have the police in their pockets?

I wanted to like this book more than I did, as it definitely has shades of Firefly in it and sets up what could be an interesting world - heck, universe - to explore. I almost wanted this to be a TV series rather than a book - I had trouble visualizing the different worlds/planets they visit, and what the spaceships or mod machines (the way you can change how you look on a whim) looked like and worked. The plot itself is a little light, too, as it's really just them being chased for the majority of the time, and you don't really know why. Or, well, I did kind of figure it out actually. Things were telegraphed early on and not very subtly. It has promise, though, and while the story is self-contained it left room for sequels. ( )
