Nothing inherently wrong with this volume. Great art. Gripping story. So sad there is not more... ( )

It’s been many years since I read Neil Gaiman’s short story about Sherlock Holmes with a Chthonian twist, and yet the strange veins of this story have always stuck with me for their macabre nature so I was super excited to read this graphic novel adaptation. While I wasn’t very impressed with the depiction of the human characters (sorry, but Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman will always visually be my Holmes and Watson and I can’t get behind those ridiculous muttonchop sideburns), I absolutely loved the artist’s take on Victorian London. It was a little cleaner than expected, since we all know London was a pretty filthy city pre-environmental clean-up (and still can be pretty gross due to human volume), but I’ll let that slide due to the alternate reality of a world ruled by the Old Ones. I don’t recall the original story being quite so upfront about the Chthonian nature of Queen Victoria, but maybe the text was just a bit more subtle than the visual depiction can afford to be - hard to downplay a room with green innards splashed everywhere when it’s in literal emerald green on the page. The story, of course, is what really piques the interest though, as it hints towards a whole other alternate universe, where humanity is in thrall (yet mostly happily so) to the ruling class of Old Gods. Gaiman could honestly take this small instance with Holmes and Watson and expand it endlessly by reimagining other classic literary characters in a world where they either fight with or against the ruling Lovecraftian deities. But maybe that would ruin the magic of this small and perfect gem of a story, so best to leave it with Holmes and Watson. ( )

A Sherlock Holmes/Cthulhu mashup with a twisty, cliffhanger ending! ( )

Part of me is annoyed I waited so long to read this and the other part of me is mad I did read. It’s an incomplete story. It spends so much time on set up, and then wraps up so quickly that I feel there is quite a bit missing. And I want to know more. This is a mash up between Sherlock Holmes and Cathullu in what feels like an alternate world. I would love to read this as a full novel or even with more books in graphic novel series as the artwork was amazing. ( )

This is a really interesting re-telling of Conan Doyle's "A Study in Scarlet" done in typical Gaiman style with an imaginative fantasy flourish, a touch of H.P. Lovecraft and the Cthulhu Mythos of the Old Ones It is a good read and as always in my experience with Gaiman's writing reads quickly and is well written. But the real star in this one for me was the artwork by Rafael Albuquerque. His drawing style adds depth and dimension to the story and his artwork is amazing. He really brings a fullness to the story that truly makes it a graphic novel. ( )
