This novel is a perfect depiction of what life was like for the Syrian refugees, the lives they were forced to live, them trying to escape and a war zone. This book may need to be labeled for sensitive content due to the visuals that the author is able to give with his depictions of these events. Using this book in history classes and english classes can be a beneficial resources for students in order to truly grasp what the people were going through during these dark times. ( )

This book is a startling but honest look at how Syrians were being treated unfairly, a fact that was emphasized by them being referred to as "the unwanted." It details all of the struggles the people who were searching for a better life had to face, and ends with the success stories some of them had. It would be great for using in a history or government class while going over current issues. It is a hard to read book because it is a sad look at reality, but wonderfully done. ( )

In 2011, Syrian refugees flood out of their country because of the war. These victims overflood neighborhoods, and towns and resentement starts builidng up. By 2017, many people dont want to help the victims and the syrian refugees become the unwanted. This books shows what the Syrian refugees went through and are still going through during this crisis. I think kids should read this so that they can see what goes on in other countries and give them different perspectives of what goes on in the world around them. ( )

The book puts the student inside the shoes of a Syrian refugee and is an eye opening novel to the life they live. It is a great book to use in an writing lesson, where students express their feelings on what is going on and possibly coming up with a solution. I recommend this book for students that are in seventh grade and above. ( )
