Brave Jane Austen, a picture book biography of the groundbreaking female novelist. Perfect for Women's History Month. Born in the late 1700s, Jane Austen was a smart, creative girl in a house full of boys, all of whom could aspire to accomplish many things as adults while girls were raised primarily to become good wives. Jane didn't have much opportunity to go to school but she read everything she could, including all the books in her father's study. And before long, she began to write her own stories, filled with funny, clever, and inventive characters. Jane Austen is a wonderful English author, this book covers her life story. It is a book made to not only tell you about the life of Jane Austen and for children to understand the differences between when she was a child and now. This story is also very good for covering the different lives that English girls led compared to English boys. This story would be perfect for history assignments, language assignments, and writing assignments. Being an avid Jane Austen reader I believe this is a wonderful book. This book helps students to learn the changes that have occurred within society over the decades. ( )

This book is a small autobiography on Jane Austen’s life. Jane was a writer in the early 1800s and this book tells her story. I learned how strong and smart Jane was as a child to recognize how boys and girls were raised differently and how she thought that was unfair. She wanted to do more than just sew and mend. With much of her free time, she read a lot of books and wrote many stories with the creative mind she had. When she wanted her first book published, they said no bc it was “unladylike.”This book teaches the readers the struggles of being a girl in the late 1700s and how difficult it was for Jane. This can encourage young readers that they can be anything they set their mind to if they work hard. ( )

Jan Austen was born in the late 1700's. She was a very creative and smart girl, but in the time period she was born, many woman were raised and "trained" to be a good housewife. She never really was able to go to school, but Jane longed for knowledge and read everything that she could. She then used those books as a kind of model, and before long she started writing her own stories. Fast forward to the present, and many of Jane's books are revered and studied! She created works like "First Impressions" (which is now called Pride and Prejudice), "Mansfield Park", and "Emma". I personally loved this book! The story was so captivating and the illustrations were very prim and proper. It also had a very huge sense of feminism that was portrayed and I think that is a very important lesson for young woman to know: no matter where you came from, what circumstances, what society says, you can be whatever you aspire to be! Brave Jane Austen: Reader, Writer, Author, Rebel by Lisa Pliscou is a biography about life of Jane Austen who lived in the late 1700's. Girls did not attend school at that time. Jane read everything she could and most of the books in her father's study. She began writing stories, and became a one of the most famous writers of all time. I think this book would be beneficial for elementary school students to read and give encouragement especially to young girls to read and be all that they can be.
