A daring pilot races against time to deliver an important package -- and keep it from falling into the wrong hands -- in this #1 New York Times bestselling thriller of spine-tingling suspense and tantalizing romance. Rye Mallett, a fearless "freight dog" pilot charged with flying cargo to far-flung locations, is rough-spoken and all business, but soft on regulations when they get in the way of meeting a deadline. But above all, he has a rock-solid reputation: he will fly in the foulest weather, day or night, and deliver the goods safely to their destination. So when Rye is asked to fly into a completely fogbound northern Georgia town and deliver a mysterious black box to a Dr. Lambert, he doesn't ask questions. As Rye's plane nears the isolated landing strip, more trouble than inclement weather awaits him. Greeted with a sabotage attempt on his plane, he has barely recovered from the crash landing when he meets Dr. Brynn O'Neal, who claims she is receiving the box for Dr. Lambert. Though he has a strict "no-involvement policy" when it comes to others' problems, Rye finds himself being irresistibly drawn in to the intrigue surrounding his cargo . . . and to the mysterious and alluring Brynn. Soon Rye and Brynn are in a treacherous forty-eight-hour race to deliver the box. With everyone from law enforcement officials to hired guns hot on their heels, they must learn to trust each other to protect their valuable cargo from those who would kill for it.… (més)

Dr. Brynn O'Neal is in a race with time to get a lifesaving drug to Senator Richard Hunt. Pilot Rye Mallett is hired to transport the box containing the drug through a heavy fog from Columbus, Ohio to Atlanta because he is the only pilot who is reckless enough to attempt the flight. When he wrecks the plane as he is landing at an airfield outside of Atlanta and discovers the manager of the airfield has been attacked, Ryan knows there is more going on than just transporting the box. After meeting Brynn, she makes it clear to Ryan that she is interested in getting the drug to a young girl on the verge of dying instead of the Senator, which puts them both in danger. Although Ryan says he doesn't want to be involved, he couldn't be more involved if he tried.
In Tailspin, it isn't clear why Ryan continues to involve himself until almost the end of the book. There are a couple of weak twists which show up at the end of the story, but they are fairly predictable. The villains in the book that create some of the suspense are mostly one dimensional and the romance lacks emotion. Overall, this isn't one of Sandra Brown's best efforts. ( )

The pilot, Rye Mallat, flies a box through a vicious storm, but when he crash lands, finds Dr. O'Neal waiting for him. She won't tell him what is in the box. Although Rye has a "no involvement" policy, he is intrigued by the mystery of the box and and the beautiful Dr. O'Neal. The story takes them to Atlanta and Tennessee, rushing to get the box to its destination before time runs out. They are followed by thugs, law enforcement and must learn to trust each other or possibly be killed.
This book is a great read that is impossible to put down. ( )

This is a romantic-suspense novel about “freight dog” Rye Mallet, who is called upon to deliver a time-sensitive package, and a physician who wants the package for herself.

Rye knows this isn’t any ordinary flight or package. He isn’t even allowed to know the contents of the package he is transporting. In addition, the weather conditions are so dismal that most major airports in the area he is flying into are closed. There is one airstrip open, and one controller available.

Rye has flown in worse conditions (bad weather doesn’t bother him) and volunteers anyway. But, he never expects sabotage and a crash to be included under the “worse” conditions category. Nor does he expect to be greeted by a lovely doctor (Brynn O’Neal), who isn’t the actual recipient of the package. And, she isn’t revealing what the package is.

Rye has questions which are put on hold when he, along with Brynn, stumble upon the unconscious controller bringing the local police into the situation. Neither Brynn nor Rye wants to tell the entire truth of their respective situations. Brynn is forced to reveal the contents to the police – blood samples for an experiment.

The police aren’t the only two interested in Rye and Brynn. Two goons, Goliad and Timmy, will stop at nothing to get the box that Brynn is guarding with her life. Rye tries not to get involved, but stays involved for reasons he can’t even understand.

Halfway through the novel, Rye soon learns the truth about the package and why Brynn is so desperate to hold on to it. His “no involvement” policy turns into a race against the clock to get Brynn and her package where she wants to be while avoiding the two goons who are determined to see she is redirected. Rye risks his pilot’s license to see Brynn succeed while trying not to fall completely in love with her.

This book, at 424 pages, is an interesting and intriguing read which takes place over a 48 hour time period. There are a lot of characters to keep up with (at least 7-8 characters), and for some readers it might jump around too much in the action.

The “steamy” sex scenes aren’t until almost three-quarters (¾) of the way in. For some readers they might be too explicit. For those who are looking for more of the steamier stuff – this might be lacking. If you’re not exactly sure if you want to buy it – borrow it from the library, which is what I did. It tends more toward the “suspense” genre than the romance.

Once the plot is revealed at the halfway point, it picks up the pace in getting to the end. I pretty much knew how it was going to end after the half point reveal. There are a few chapters from another character’s perspective (titled only by their name) which adds a sense of urgency as well as compassion to the heart of the story.

It was an interesting read with a “happy as can be, given the situation” ending, which does seem to slide into a rapid finish. It wasn’t a quick read by my standards (2-day or weekend read), but not nearly a long read (7-14 days) either. I was able to read it in about four (4) days which is about 100 pages per day. ( )

Just an OK book. Events were sometimes farfetched, and too unbelievable. ( )

Please see all of my reviews on my blog at www.robinlovesreading.blogspot.com

Before I get started, just let me say that before I even open the first page of one of Sandra Brown's books that I was fairly certain that it is going to be five stars, top of the line. Tailspin most assuredly proved that fact to be true. Kudos to Sandra Brown, who has the moniker, the Queen of Suspense. What she has done in this book is solid proof that she deserves that title.

This story takes place over just two days time. When pilot Rye Mallett agrees to fly at a very dangerous time of night due to the weather, things exploded as the plane was sabotaged and he is forced to crash land. He was to deliver a critical package to a Dr. Lambert. But, it is not Dr. Lambert that came to pick up the package, it is Dr. Brynn O'Neal who comes for it. What is in the black box that Rye was delivering? Brynn won't say and suddenly, they both are in grave danger, and she and Rye are in a race against time. The package remains a mystery to Rye at first, but while trying to help Brynn, despite the ever-present danger, he realizes how drawn he is to her. It is just the same for Brynn. Their chemistry is undeniable.

I read this book at breakneck speed. The first 65% flew by in one sitting, and due to other obligations I had to take a break. Then I read the rest of the book like it was just a few pages. THAT is how good the story is. I was gripped right from the very beginning. During this incredible ride, there are many exciting twists and turns, especially during those final chapters. WOW! I could not even imagine which direction things would take.

This is no sweet romance. When Rye and Brynn come together, although definitely not the focus of this book, it is incendiary. With this being a romantic suspense, we know that the characters will end up together. However, Sandra Brown does a good job in creating enough conflict for readers to believe that it just cannot happen. Both of these characters were strong and memorable, and the plot was fluent. This is an exceptional read, and utterly thrilling. I most assuredly look forward Ms. Brown's next book.

I want to extend a huge thank you to Grand Central Publishing for this ARC to review. This review reflects my honest opinion. ( )
