"Active Memory" is the third installment in the Mirador series by Dan Wells (Bluescreen, 2016; Ones and Zeroes, 2017). Set in Los Angeles in the year 2050, this story follows a band of friends as they attempt to make sense of a recent discovery of a severed hand in a gang shootout. If finding a severed hand isn't bad enough, a DNA test reveals it belongs to Zenaida de Maldonado, believed to be dead for over a decade.
Marisa Carneseca was involved in the car crash that supposedly killed Zenaida, losing her biological arm in the process. The reason why then 2-year-old Marisa was in that car to begin with is unknown. As more layers to this mystery are unveiled, the rivalry between the Carnesecas and Maldonados reveals itself to be more nuanced and involved than anyone realized.
This novel is action-packed and gripping. I have not read the first two books in this series and, although there was some back story that was unknown to me, the piece overall was easy to follow and understandable. There is a very diverse cast of characters in this novel, with numerous languages intertwined in the dialogue, including Spanish, Chinese, and German.
I was pleasantly surprised to find that I thoroughly enjoyed Active Memory. Science Fiction is not a genre that I typically read, so having a story that kept my interest and had me craving more is a testament to the skill of Wells as a writer. I would definitely recommend this title. (
