NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * A shocking discovery on a honeymoon in paradise changes the lives of a picture-perfect couple in this taut psychological thriller debut--for readers of Ruth Ware, Paula Hawkins, and Shari Lapena. "A psychological thriller that captivated me from page one. What unfolds makes for a wild, page-turning ride! It's the perfect beach read!"--Reese Witherspoon (Reese's Book Club x Hello Sunshine book pick) If you could make one simple choice that would change your life forever, would you?   Erin is a documentary filmmaker on the brink of a professional breakthrough, Mark a handsome investment banker with big plans. Passionately in love, they embark on a dream honeymoon to the tropical island of Bora Bora, where they enjoy the sun, the sand, and each other. Then, while scuba diving in the crystal blue sea, they find something in the water. . . .   Could the life of your dreams be the stuff of nightmares?   Suddenly the newlyweds must make a dangerous choice: to speak out or to protect their secret. After all, if no one else knows, who would be hurt? Their decision will trigger a devastating chain of events. . . .   Have you ever wondered how long it takes to dig a grave?   Wonder no longer. Catherine Steadman's enthralling voice shines throughout this spellbinding debut novel. With piercing insight and fascinating twists, Something in the Water challenges the reader to confront the hopes we desperately cling to, the ideals we're tempted to abandon, and the perfect lies we tell ourselves. Praise for Something in the Water "Arresting . . . deftly paced, elegantly chilly . . . [Catherine] Steadman brings . . . wit, timing and intelligence to this novel. . . . Something in the Water is a proper page-turner."--The New York Times "With unreliable characters, wry voices, exquisite pacing, and a twisting plot, Steadman potently draws upon her acting chops. . . . A darkly glittering gem of a thriller from a new writer to watch."--Kirkus Reviews (starred review) "Captivating . . . daring . . . The threats and increasingly bad decisions accelerate with Bourne-like velocity. . . . Steadman [is] a newcomer worth watching."--Publishers Weekly "An unbearably tense debut with a knockout premise, Something in the Water had me hooked from the very first sentence. Thrilling and thought-provoking, it's the perfect beach read. I devoured it!"--Riley Sager, bestselling author of Final Girls… (més)

Started off slow, but ok. Quite a transparent plot and a supremely stupid narrator. Seriously, how did Erin make it to adulthood? It’s like it’s opposite day all the time for her. Husband lost his job and you barely make enough to cover the groceries? Go ahead and have a wedding, honeymoon and try to get pregnant. What idiots! Find a USB drive with a bunch of contraband and dead people? Of course ignore it. Can’t be important. Nah.

Anyway...it was obvious from the start that Mark wasn’t what he seemed and was gaslighting her pretty much all the time. Just how culpable he was in this whole thing is pretty unclear though. Stumbling on a plane crash in the Pacific ocean is a big stretch. All we have is Erin’s guesses and we know how in tune with reality she is. It was disappointing that she couldn’t have given us more info on him - like why he really got let go from his job, how he knew how to hire thugs, etc. And, speaking of thugs, we just knew that Eddie would get involved in this whole thing. How beholden to him she will be is unclear in the end, but we know she’s on the hook.

It isn’t a terrible book, but it’s slow, predictable & has very little payoff. I’m glad I didn’t read this one first because Mr. Nobody is better by far. ( )

This was a quick read and one that had been on my to-read list for a long while. It was good but i have a couple beefs with it. 1) please don't give away the ending before we even begin the story!! And 2) please don't include me, the reader in the story!!! If these 2 things are the author's style then i won't bother reading anything else. I like to be kept guessing, i want to try to figure things out for myself and i certainly don't want the author speaking to me, the reader in the story!! I speak for myself but i'm guessing many readers are the same, you read to escape into a place, a story, lives etc you want to be enveloped in a story. So those were my complaints but wait a second, like someone else said here on LT, "why did she have to be such a twit"? So true. *Spoiler aleart* -She was not clever and as soon as her husband got her to do all the dirty work, it was clear where it was going. ( )

I have read two novels by Catherine Steadman and I will say this one is her best work. I loved this book. As it turns out this is her first novel and here I am just getting around to reading it. The suspense levels are perfect. Genre is psychological thriller.

There have been times I have said to my husband, wouldn't it be cool to find a big suitcase of money abandoned in the woods? He always said it would bring more trouble than it's worth. This book has that message and it's full twists and turns.

The primary setting is London and Norfolk England. Erin a documentary filmaker and her husband-to-be Mark is an investment banker. They are planning a lush wedding when Mark is suddenly fired from his well paying job. They start the cutback on expenses from everyday living to the wedding. The honesymoon was paid for so they go off to Bora Bora for the last exciting fling and expenditure.

While scuba diving they discover something in the water which is a real game changer. This ordinary couple unwittingly fall into sinister situation and it's a real page turner.

The story begins with Erin telling us how hard it is to dig a grave. In the movies the dirt flings up as if a dog is throwing soft dirt from a hole. The reality is it's back breaking work and your muscles are sore as you prepare to hide your husband's body in a hole. Wait! She's burying her husband and this is in the start? So is that a spoiler before you get into the book - nope!

As you get into the story you see the sequence of events and I can say, I never guessed how things would turn out. I liked this novel better than her latest. Right now I am caught up on Catherine Steadman's books and I look forward to more in the future. ( )

This was so good, I listened to the whole audiobook in one day, I just couldn't stop listening. I did manage to predict part of the twist but it still had plenty of surprises for me. ( )

I know there have been many different opinions on this one, but I really liked it. I felt the husband was shady from the beginning...never cared for him. The wife was strong and did what she wanted. Maybe not always the smartest move, but it worked. ( )
