Dear Listener, Twilight Whispers was a challenge for me. At the time I wrote it--1987--I wanted to push myself as a writer. The result: a book that was longer and more complex than anything I had written before then. In many respects, it is my first mainstream novel. Here is the story of three families: the Warrens and the Whytes, wealthy, powerful, and connected by the marriage of Deborah Warren and Mark Whyte; and the not-so-wealthy Morells--Cassie, the loyal housekeeper for the Warrens, and her daughter, Katia, who grew up with and adores the Warren and Whyte children. The story opens with the funeral of Deborah and Mark, who have been murdered. In the course of his investigation, Robert Cavanaugh, the detective assigned to the case, traces the rise of the families to power and uncovers secrets and scandals aplenty. He also comes to admire--and I hope you will come to love--Jordan Whyte and Katia Morell, whose futures are irrevocably linked. Twilight Whispers is part family saga, part murder mystery, and part love story. Re-reading this book in anticipation of its reissue, I was enthralled by its characters just as strongly as I was when the book was first published so many years ago. It stands the test of time. I highly recommend it Truly, Barbara Delinsky…

This is a throbbing sensual romance about the serving girl who falls in love with the prince, set among America's East Coast aristocracy, involving also a murder mystery which is resolved by a caring and sensitive police detective who violates all credible investigative routine to do so. There is much flashbacking to the mid-20th century (the book was written and set in 1988). I got hold of it for the totally spurious reason that one of the characters, described as 'somber yet dashing', rejoices in the name of Nicholas Whyte, but he turns out to have little to do with the plot. Will appeal to steamy romance readers but doesn't really pull off the police procedural leg of the plot. ( )

Rather engrossing story with interesting characters. Too many of them at first, to identify with them but this really needed to be read twice to appreciate it. ( )

Cassie, the loyal housekeeper for the Warrens and her daughter (Gill Warren: dad), Katia, who grew up with and adores the Warren and Whyte children. Deborah & Mark White (a pervert!) were murdered. The investigatior, Robert Cavanaugh assigned to the case found evidence that Jordan Whyte had killed his brother and sister-in-law. I really liked the detective and appreciated the fact that there was no love interest (only his girlfriend). It turned out the head of police was involved with the murder. I loved the family togetherness in this book. Jordan thought Katia was his half-sister and hesitated falling in love with her. ( )
