( ) Ray Bradbury is arguably one of the cleverest and most colorful authors of our age. This volume showcases that life through the images of his works. I first came upon it in high school while working on a term paper on Ray and his science fiction. Years later, I was ecstatic to find it on super-steep discount at my university book store and gobbled it right up. Part biography, part picture gallery, this 'Illustrated Life" is a collection of many of the images that inspired Bradbury's writing as well as countless images draw for his books and stories. They are mostly book covers, but there are also sketches, illuminations, even comics. To see the many ways people have interpreted Bradbury's work is fascinating, especially looking at some of the foreign editions, which have a completely different feel than those published in America. Weist gives some insight in to the thought processes behind many of those pieces, with commentary from the master himself, an a really unique journey though his body of work. I will say that this is mostly a work for Bradbury completists like myself, but any one curious as to how the art on our book covers comes to be, and sci-fi art fans in general, should get a kick out of this "Journey to Far Metaphor".
