A small community tucked deep in the forest, Beartown is home to tough, hardworking people who don't expect life to be easy or fair. No matter how difficult times get, they've always been able to take pride in their local ice hockey team. So it's a cruel blow when they hear that Beartown ice hockey might soon be disbanded. What makes it worse is the obvious satisfaction that all the former Beartown players, who now play for a rival team in the neighboring town of Hed, take in that fact. As the tension mounts between the two adversaries, a newcomer arrives who gives Beartown hockey a surprising new coach and a chance at a comeback.… (més)

A broad story about a game, a town, and the people in it. At first I had some trouble keeping track of so many characters, but in the end, I was fully immersed in the town and the struggles of each character and how they impacted each other. ( )

The sequel to one of my favorite books of 2017. Life is hockey, the rest is just details...

Beartown Hockey is down and out, having lost its best player and the championship game to neighboring Hed Hockey. General manager Peter Andersson's family life is wrecked, and his junior players have no team. A manipulative politician finds a new team sponsor, who will build a factory in Beartown, but the diehard thug fans have to go. A female coach is found for the A team, creating even more divisiveness, and the little brother of the head thug is paroled so he can become the team goalie. At its core, this book is all about love and hatred, friendships won and lost, sexuality, competitiveness, rivalries, life and death, the wonderful and horrible things people do to each other. My favorite scenes were when the Bears all wear a piece of white tape with the name of a teammates mother and when both teams wear black armbands in memory of a fallen comrade. ( )

I think I've underlined a third of the book. It's a tough read, but a magnificent one. It's Backman! No more needs to be said. ( )

In this second Beartown novel, the Beartown councilmen are getting rid of its hockey team and trying to throw their support to the Bulls in Hed. Peter Andersson is out of a job and his marriage to Kira is falling apart. Maya, a guitar player, and Ana take over the island that had been used by Kevin and Benji after being introduced to it by Benji while they were dealing with the fallout of the rape of Maya by Kevin. Richard Theo, a councilman and wheeler-dealer, works behind the scenes to rescue the hockey team and gain more influence and power. The new team is built around Amat, Benji, Bobo, and Vidar (goalie). Peter Andersson is again General Manager, a woman becomes the A-Team coach, and the messy rivalry with Hed is on with Theo and The Pack headed by Vidar's older brother, Teemu calling the shots. Basically this is a novel about human feelings and reactions due to life conditions--here dramatized by hockey competition between two small towns, Beartown and Hed. ( )

When I pick up a Fredrik Backman book I never know if it will be a 5 star read or end up in the ditch pile. I loved Beartown but this felt like a long drawn out extension of the same story. Same town, same litany of social issues. For the most part I found it monotonous, but in classic Backman style it was sprinkled throughout with powerful or beautiful quotable statements on being human. On a more positive note, Backman is an insightful master at character. In all his books, he consistently comes up with thoughtful, nuanced and complicated characters from all walks of life. I always enjoy that aspect of his books. ( )
