Kept waiting for this book to get good or to end. Despite the average high ratings here, I didn’t find it worth spending any more time on. I gave up about halfway through. ( )

Well! This book gives so much to think about, so many secrets and hidden surprises, twists and turns. I'm finding myself almost getting lost in switching stories between each other, even a nod to Troubles Keepers bus driver Rory slips in and out quickly while tying these stories together somehow. But this book is mostly about authors and books and one particular book, which is more of a headliner to the story playing its part through several different roles.

Of course every author wants a Best Seller! But Nem has secrets, too. When her mother is killed by her boyfriend, a long-held book becomes a major player in the life Nem is about to embark on. Still a child, she knows this book is very important. It looks like a diary but is so much more. She begins to follow the mystery of the book and the magic in the words. Now that Nem is orphaned, and Alan West, her mother's killer, is in jail, she is placed with a very nice couple. But the book is starting to do strange things. I suppose one could say on the "good" side, Alan dies in prison. One less irritant in her life, if she knows how it works. She feels there is magic in words, and a mystery. What is Dr. Shepherd's role in Nem's life? What is his history? Nem is unhappy with him, she doesn't trust him. Strangely, a number of people seem to be developing cancer at more or less the same time.

Occasionally I got lost in the story, but didn't take long to get back into it. Nem has a lot going on and I am occasionally rushing to catch up again. So much happens as the story goes along. She is happy to be with her adoptive parents, along with her kitten. But let's take a little time for her to grow up. This is possibly the largest book I've read, so it's getting time for Nem to think about her future, and wouldn't a Best Seller be a great way to start off as a young lady? So, we come to a previous Best Seller author, William. But something seems a little off. In fact, quite a bit has changed, with his agent, with his standing, actually with everything going downhill. Meanwhile, what is happening with Nem? She has taken on a new author name. Just who is Orelia? There is so much to be said about this book. It was fascinating, changeable, ironic, is it cursed? Or is it the diary? Best Seller, ideal title because that is sincerely what it is. Loved the little personal touch of Ella, brief as it was, Sue May. Congratulations on your BEST SELLER! Great book! With a truly original plot, and her, as usual, perfectly developed characters, this book will grab you by your lapels and demand you keep reading until the end. This is a history about greed, and jealousy and need, About what you're willing to do to achieve success and recognition.

A paranormal thriller that will trap even those who are not really into the genre, that is how good it is.

Enough has been said about the plot and I don't want to risk including a spoiler. So I'll take a different approach by saying I've been reading Susan May's writings for a few years and she just keeps getting better and better. Best Seller is her best work to date and there aren't enough positive adjectives to describe how much I enjoyed this novel. The characters are well-developed and it was interesting to experience the psychological changes they made throughout the novel. The story line is perfectly paced and expertly thought out. Ms. May has become masterful at intrigue and knows how to keep you wanting to read more by ending each chapter with a mini-cliffhanger!

If you like dark mysteries that are skillfully written, Susan May is the author to read. You won't be disappointed! After the novel ends, I love her Imagination Vault. She discusses where her ideas come from and how she fits them into her novels. Fascinating stuff. ( )
