The Emperor needs necromancers. The Ninth Necromancer needs a swordswoman. Gideon has a sword, some dirty magazines, and no more time for undead nonsense. Tamsyn Muir's Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap off the page, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse. She packs up her sword, her shoes, and her dirty magazines, and prepares to launch her daring escape. But her childhood nemesis won't set her free without a service. Harrowhark Nonagesimus, Reverend Daughter of the Ninth House and bone witch extraordinaire, has been summoned into action. The Emperor has invited the heirs to each of his loyal Houses to a deadly trial of wits and skill. If Harrowhark succeeds she will be become an immortal, all-powerful servant of the Resurrection, but no necromancer can ascend without their cavalier. Without Gideon's sword, Harrow will fail, and the Ninth House will die. Of course, some things are better left dead.… (més)

This book mixes a whole bunch of genres really well. I loved the atmosphere, and the biting dialogue and humor were exquisite. ( )

In the end, I liked this book, but Im not sure it was worth the struggle. I had an impossible time getting into it, I kept getting the characters mixed up. The character list in the front of the book is not as useful as it could be if I could write notes reminding me of various interactions with the main characters. I probably didn’t really get into this book until 2/3 of the way in. I stuck with it though because so many of my friends loved it. ( )

Its like And Then There Were None but its lesbian necromancers in space.

I liked this book but I think a lot of the plot got away from me while I was trying to figure who was who. People would be referred to interchangeably by their first name, last name, house name, nickname, or job and it all got a bit confusing. I might read the sequels im not sure, I like fantasy but I don't always enjoy high fantasy and this was high as hell even though it was set in space and on various unearthly planets. ( )

On my first attempt at this book, I stalled out within the first few chapters. They are grim, dystopic, and very very goth, introducing the reader to our protagonist and their double-crossing necromancer nemesis. The initial setting is disquieting, but fortunately, once the two get off their starting world, the story gets moving a little, and Muir gets a chance to use their descriptive strengths well. This meant that by the time I got to the meat of the story, I was fascinated. Not so much by the plot or characters, but by the writing itself (I found the characters a little too uncanny valley, and the plot a little meandering. However, my understanding is that this is Muir's first published novel, so a little unevenness is comprehensible).

What I was expecting was complex dark fantasy with necromancers.

The following is spoilery

---------

What I got had a great deal more Christie in it, as the deaths piled up, in increasingly bizarre manners. I will not fault Muir's imagination here, although in places I was glad that I don't visualise what a writer is giving me, as I may well have been more unnerved than I was. There were also some long and involved fight scenes, which I presume were necessary for the plot, but which I struggled through -- particularly the one at the end with the unexpected Big Bad. ( )

„Ich bin Gideon“ ist sprachlich überschäumend, grell und laut wie eine romangewordene Fahrt mit der Geisterbahn. Zugegeben, es gibt Passagen, in denen es noch ein wenig ruckt und rumpelt. Aber Tamsyn Muir ist jung, erst 1985 in Neuseeland geboren und „Ich bin Gideon“ ist ihr Romandebüt. Dieses Debüt ist ihr großartig gelungen.
